THE 2023 SEASON
The 2023 men's season got off to a low key start yesterday with the U16's and U18's playing their first games of the season.
Eagles 3.1 4.2 7.3 11.5
West 4.3 7.7 10.8 11.9
The U16s were for three quarters out classed by the Bloods but a very good last quarter saw our U16s get with in 4 points with 90 secs to go. The players took some chances to win but turned the ball over to lose by 4 points.
Brock Jamieson at Full Forward kicked 5.3 to be our best player also up forward Freddie Wilson clunked a couple for 2 goals. Onballers Jack Cooke and Zane Peucker were excellent and Jevan Phillipou was steady across half back.
Eagles 3.0 9.2 14.4 18.7
West 0.5 0.5 1.5 5.7
The U18s got off to a slow start in the first quarter and with 4 mins to go were 0.0 to 0.5 down but a sudden burst of three goals saw them lead
3.0 to 0.5 at quarter time. That last 4 minutes and the rest of the match saw our U18s play some superb football, highly exciting, well disciplined and filled with well executed skills. It was an excellent team effort with many passages of exhilarating football. A little bit of an ease up by the Eagles in the last quarter saw both teams kick four goals.
The U18s were without Tyler Welsh and Charlie West both academy players, also our star CHB Oscar Pearce (198cm) badly sprained an ankle in the second quarter and didn't return.
Rome Burgoyne was very smooth and reliable across half back, Brodie Mair in the centre got better as the game progressed, Pat Toole did some exciting running. Callum Fairall showed great dash and anticipation to initiate two of the best goals of the match. Seb Menta took a couple of strong grabs for three goals. Others to play well were, Archer Charles, Riley Davey (a neat left footed wing/half back) and the always reliable Harry Dodd.
Overall it was a great team effort.

Well done Wimpy and much appreciated
Our U18s seem appear to be stacked with talent this year largely as a result of our Premiership winning U16s last season. A lot to get excited by. Clearly a number of them are AFL bound but you'd think at least a handful may progress to become very good League players.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
The U18s for 2023 could be similar to the very good U18 team of 2021. The majority of the 2021 team was elevated to play reserves in 2022 and again they have been retained at reserves and league level for 2023. There looked to be quite a lot of the U18s that could be playing at least reserves in 2024, a very impressive group of lads.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
Very well written report Wimpy.
The Advertiser or SANFL could benefit from your reporting, made me feel like I was at the games (and I wasn't). Early days but it appears a rich vein of skilled players are continuing to progress through the club.

Thanks "The Barton"
I like my Eagles.
Nothing better than watching the up and comers.

Who controls the stats and player photos on our website. Our website seems to just piggyback off the main SANFL site.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
A few IFS, but going from Friday night's game. IF Lukac has found what he needed to find to step up to League level and offer a competitive contest, and IF Brinker-Ritchie recovers from injury and proves to be the number 1 ruckman and IF Dan Menzel recovers from injury and continues his form from last season... could Weckert be the Centre Half Back or Full Back we are needing this season? That short stint he had in Ruck in that last quarter showed he has a few more strings to his bow than just being a focal point up forward. Seems a natural footballer to me, good size, good athlete, good kick. I guess he'll be off with the U18 State side for a period of the season, but will be interesting to see how Sheedy places the jigsaw puzzle as the season progresses.

Good point "Aerie". I have been talking to a few Eagles supporters lately about Weckert playing in the back lines. Last year in the U18s he played quite a bit of the season at CHB, late in the season he was moved up forward, just something to look at.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
Jimmy Rowe wins Fos Williams medal. SA side winning captain an Eagle. Balendran kicks winning goal. Mitch Hardie had 25 disposals, 11 marks and seven tackles
Our boys played well for SA and hopefully no injuries.

Round 9 Eagles v Crows. Can Eagles members go to the game at Adelaide Oval just to watch Eagles game or do you have to buy Crows tickets

Also in the State U18 vs U20 match D'Aloia names BOG for the victorious U20s winning the medal. And Pearce second best (with 3 goals). Some good signs

Also had six in the U18 team. Three (Tom Luck, Kade Herbert and Tyler Welsh) were first year under U18s.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
Did anyone follow the state U18 match. Just wondering if Patrick Weckert was injured. He received a very low player rating. Also any update on Tyler Welsh.

Went and watched the state game. Weckert did nothing, very much out of touch. In his defence, in the first half the ball never got down to SA's forward area. At half time the scoring shots were 16 to 3, it just shows how bad SA were, dreadful in fact. The Allies turned off in the second half and SA went a little better. Callum Fairall and Kade Herbert were quite good. Fairall shows class as a halfback/wingman. Herbert's effort was very good considering he has another year to go in the U18's.

Re: THE 2023 SEASON
Did Tom Luck play? I was reading a summary of the better players from each side. I note that the two key SANFL ruckman (not Luck) are listed as 'draftable ruckman' but no mention of Luck.
Clearly he is too short to play ruck in an AFL side so will be interesting to see how AFL club's view his potential for alternative positions mainly as a key forward. Perhaps he will grow another 5cm because he is too young to be drafted this year?
