Unfortunately, his aerial skills are non-existent at present with his first instinct to spoil even when in front position against smaller opponent's. Accept that it's tough for anyone to come up against the best 2 SANFL ruckman in Boyd and Brooksby. Unfortunately, there's still North Adelaide's Harvey and Crows Strachan to come. Despite being outclassed, the Eagles showed fight and kicking straight could have secured an unlikely win against a side boasting aerial supremacy in Sproule, Skinner, Brooksby, Freitag, Haines. I thought that this season would be another developmental year in view of not being able to recruit a seasoned ruckman, key forward and key back. If we can get games into Brinker-Ritchie and Lukac we might be in a little better shape next year. With Brinker-Ritchie, no SANFL ruckman is going to have a better reach at centre bounces but, like Lukac, will be pushed aside with opponent's body strength. But hey! it will come. (noticed that Brisbane/exWWT 205cm Henry Smith is contracted until end 2024 so that's no help).
Rowe was very good but I admired the toughness (and skill) of Hardie...again
Have to agree with your points on Lukac re his aerial skills.
I noticed that in the last half when he was stationed a lot up forward that a couple of times the ball was kicked towards him and he'd approach the mark only putting up one arm rather than two for some reason.
For the time being I think he looks better in the ruck than at up forward.
We have to persevere with Jordan. He will learn.
I was disappointed with Weckert. Lack of a full preseason maybe. Might be saved with Macfarlane and Thommo injuries.
The seconds as a team were disappointing.

Weckert and Lukac need to be persisted with. We saw last year how bad we were with Menzel the sole aerial target, despite Menzel winning the Ken Farmer.
Both are young and learning. Weckert doesn’t quite jump out and extend for it at this stage and Lukac I think was just being told to compete and bring the ball to ground - which resulted in going up with the one handed fist on occasions.
Lukac just needs confidence. He’s got the height and athleticism to bring in those big grabs.
Weckert isn’t quite so gifted athletically, but has done a good job contesting in that forward line so far. I think having Menzel working with him will benefit greatly. Weckert might be able to expose the 3rd defender if Menzel and Ballenden take the first two.

Agreed in relation to Lukac, however, if we do go with him I just can't see a spot for Brinker-Ritchie. It's one or the other, given we can't be carrying two players who cannot contribute to any other position (at this stage) other than ruck. Two young rucks fighting for the one spot. Not really a bad thing but I can see the club see-sawing between the two across the season. The question is where this leaves Phillips who is also a young ruck although has had an extra year or two of development over these blokes but hasn't really grabbed his chance yet?
On Weckert I do agree his numbers look a bit grim for the first two weeks but I think what he has brought is a fierce desire to compete in every contest. Given his build it's easy to forget he could still be playing U18s this season. What I have noticed is that even though he hasn't been getting the ball his efforts are there to run and chase the opposition hard. Plus he has been getting the #1 defender each week. I think with Menzel back in the side he will become a far more prominent player and this will no doubt help his confidence.

Also as someone else mentioned on here, I think Weckert could also be considered as a key defender in the weeks ahead, particularly if Thompson is out injured for a while.

Re: South v Eagles Friday 7th April
Looking to 2024, I'm iinterested in seeing young CHB Oscar Pearce play. Wimpy, have you any details on his DOB, height, weight. Also, when is he likely to return from his present injury. I did read somewhere that he was 198cm tall but that sounds unlikely. Whether he plays U18s or Seconds this year, he is an interesting prospect and ? whether he's too young also to be taken in this year's AFL draft.

At least they have listed Dan Menzel available. With a week's break (touch wood) we might have some of the test players available.

Will Pearce gone for 2 games.
Tough decision imho.
Woodville-West Torrens’ Will Pearce has accepted a two-match ban with an early guilty plea for engaging in rough conduct with South’s Joseph Haines at Flinders University Stadium on Friday.
Will Pearce (Eagles) – Rough Conduct (High Bump)
Conduct: Careless
Contact: High
Impact: High
Base Sanction: 3 matches
Early Guilty Plea: 2 matches (Accepted)

And a port player took someone out front on and only got a reprimand.

Almost identical. Hard to appeal if 3 matches is the consequence of a failed appeal.

If you mob knew my surname you’d get a laugh out of how I can piss off or annoy Port fans as I refuse to ever support them

Re: South v Eagles Friday 7th April
Does anyone else apart from Ron Casey think that Bryce Gibbs was BOG in this game?
RG didnt even get a vote in the Shearman medal.

A ridiculous opinion from Ron Casey if true. Based purely on South players, he wouldn't have even been in their top four being Skinner, O'Neil, Brooksby and Smith. And then you consider the Eagles players - no way he was a better player than Hardie or Rowe.
Makes you think Casey didn't watch the game or perhaps only caught a fraction of it then was tasked with picking the BOG and so just went Gibbs based on reputation
