Eagles Emails 2017

We have just two weeks left in the 2017 minor round and this Sunday August 20th we are holding our 2017 Eagles Community Carnival Day when we host the Adelaide Crows SANFL side at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval.

There will be plenty of action for the kids including a NAB AFL Auskick Presentation, a Kids Community Treasure Hunt as well as other FREE family friendly activities including a jumping castle, face painting and colouring in area, plus the SANFL Activation Zone. For all the information surrounding our Community Carnival Day

On Sunday we also have multiple special guests lined up for our Home Match Luncheon. You can join us for just $45 per person with a two course meal and two hour drinks package included. We have ex Adelaide Crow Kym Koster who was a member of the crows 1997 and 1998 Premiership teams. Unfortunately this will be the shortest match report I have ever done because to be honest there isn’t much to say.

As coaches and players we are always in control of our own performance and when the performance is as embarrassing and insipid as the one on Saturday all I can say is that is not who we are and is not what we stand for. The players have done an amazing job all year but this weekend was one out of the box. Amongst all the carnage we were able to achieve some small wins that will help us going forward so the game wasn’t a complete waste of time but in the end the result was unacceptable.

All I can promise is that performance is so far out of character the expectation is we will bounce back quickly. This doesn’t mean things will always click immediately but what it does mean is we will work to rectify the main areas and make sure we get back to playing the brand of football our club expects and can be proud of.

It`s always difficult to sum up a drawn game, are you happy that you didn’t lose? Or are you disappointed in letting a game get away? Drawn games are neither satisfying nor rewarding they just leave you ponder what if?

The challenge this week was always going to back up last rounds four quarter effort following the bye and as the players found out on the weekend a game can turn in 10 minutes of play, even with the drawn result the commitment & brand of footy played for majority of the game left the coaching panel excited about the future.

Kicking into a (4-5) goal breeze the boys started the game full of run & commitment & while we were down in hit outs (5 to 10) it was reversed in clearances (10 to 5) which allowed the midfield to use the ball giving our forwards opportunity to contest one on one resulting all (3) key forwards kicking goals for the quarter & at quarter time the score was 3.1 to 4.1

The second quarter saw the boys really start to get on top & start to win positions all over the ground, some of the ball movement & pressure acts were again the best for the year & we took advantage of (14) inside 50 entries for the quarter hitting the scoreboard (11) times & at half time went into the break (34) points ahead 10.5 to 5.1

As noted in the opening comments a game of football can change in 10min of play & in the first 10 minutes of the third this is exactly what took place, we started to play unaccountable football giving our opponents time & space & from this South grew in confidence, to the credit of the boys they managed to get the game back on our terms after this but with (20) inside 50 entries to (1) for the quarter at three quarter time we were trailing by (5) points 10.5 to 11.4

With the game there to be won in the final the boys set about winning the last quarter, however as with any game away when you give the home side a chance getting over them can be tough going & we found this in the last & as the quarter went on the pressure grew & some basic mistakes started to unfold. Even so the commitment to winning was never questionable & with a final play in our forward half stopped deep the siren sounded & the game ended in a draw.

From the weekends result finals are all but gone for the Reserves this year & with the next round against Adelaide the Reserves have another bye adding to the challenge of preparing for the final game against Central Districts at home, as we have seen all year football can be unpredictable & you never know what`s around the corner, therefore preparation & being ready to play is critical this time of the year.

The Under 18’s took on top side South Adelaide on Saturday with just half a game separating the two teams on the premiership table. Unfortunately for us South were too good and ran out 28 point winners. We got off to a great start with the wind and had a 4 goal lead at quarter time and we were able to restrict their scoring with the wind in the second quarter and we went in to half time with a 17 point lead. Our third quarter was a bit wasteful as with our 21 Inside 50’s we were only able to kick 2 goals and South kicked 2 as well so at three quarter time we held an 18 point lead and the scene was set where we needed a big last quarter to secure a victory. It wasn’t to be and South were too good and ran over us to win the game by 28 points. It was a disappointing end after showing such promise through the first half of the game. As for our best players, Mitch Mead did some good work on the ball for us, Tom Carter and Sam Mckay were strong defenders all day, Jordan McKinnon and Todd Hoyle battled hard and Jackson Mead an Under 16 playing just his third game also did some nice things for us both in the midfield and in defence.

This week we are playing Norwood at home and we will be working hard to bounce back with a win.

ROUND 17 – LEAGUE VS ADELAIDE

Any day you come back from a 42 point deficit at the 5 minute mark of the 3rd quarter is a good day. Even though the result was what we wanted the 1st half can’t be missed in review, but we also must look forward and be happy the hard work everyone has put in over the last month started to show signs of working.

The game started ok for us, even though we were kicking with the aid of a good breeze we couldn’t hit the scoreboard enough. Adelaide possessed the ball a lot in our half but I thought our defensive actions were holding up ok. In this period we had 14-7 entries to only score 1-3 to Adelaide’s 1-3.

The second term Adelaide really took over, we not only struggled to get the ball, when we did we were indirect and unconvincing with Adelaide keeping us scoreless while kicking 5-5.

The start of the 3rd saw Adelaide push forward and kick 1-1 early but from then on the players really stepped up the fight. As the momentum started to shift you could see the players growing in confidence as they ran in numbers and were very committed at the contest. Unfortunately we had given Adelaide a big start so at the 3 quarter time break the margin was still 22 points.

To the players credit they just kept coming, showing some real resilience and then as the scoreboard started to tick over you could see the belief growing. The final term was played mainly in our forward half having 15-4 entries and scoring 6-3 to 1-0 to run out winners by 11 hard fought points.

On the back of the last 2 games it was important for the players to feel good again, and that second half has done that. All year we have focused heavily on an 18 game season and if we were good enough we will earn the right to playing in finals. So with the 18th game this weekend against a very hungry Centrals we will work very hard to continue the momentum we gained and have a real crack.

The final home game is always precious to me, as is the nature of football you never know as a player or a coach if it will be your last at home. So with this game taking on a bit more significance hopefully as many Eagles family can get out to Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval and cheer on the lads in what promises to be a very good game.

The Under 18’s had a good win against Norwood on Saturday, running out comfortable winners by 68 points. It was a good contested match with Norwood keeping us on our toes all game. Although leading by 32 points at three quarter time, it was pleasing that in the last quarter we were able to kick 6 goals to one goal and extend the margin to the 68 points. We were a little inefficient for 3 quarters and did not use the ball well at times, mainly through the pressure Norwood applied but in the last quarter we played much more direct and efficient football and got a good result. We had many players who found a lot of the football and Cooper Gaffney was one of the those, Jack Lukosius’ 10 marks and 6 goals were very good, Tyson Friend and Isaac Moller also worked hard in our forward line with 4 and 3 goals apiece, and Sam Michael and Jake Weidemann both did well in our midfield.

This week we complete our minor round with a game against Central Districts at Football Park on Saturday starting at 6pm. Last time we played them we had a nail biter that went right down to the wire so we know it will be a good contest for us.

Sunday's Eagles Community Carnival Day was a huge success with the weather holding off for the most part and a strong crowd of 4677 people coming through the gates. The Club would especially like to recognise Phil Herden who orchestrated the day along with all the volunteers, sponsors, community groups and staff who contributed in making the day so great, thank you everyone!

The Carnival was capped off with a thrilling game of footy. It was a tale of two halves with Adelaide controlling the play taking in a 35 point buffer at half time before a second half resurgence lead by midfielders Jared Petrenko, James Boyd and Scott Lewis, turning the deficit into an 11 point victory. It was an important win for the player's confidence but also helped secure the Minor Premiership for the 2017 season.

Our Under 18's took on Norwood at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval on Saturday and had a convincing 68 point win. Cooper Gaffney found plenty of the ball while Jack Lukosius kicked 6 goals.

We take on Centrals at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval this Saturday in what will be the Reserves last game for 2017 after just missing out on a finals berth. The Under 18's also play Centrals this Saturday with a 6pm kick off at Football Park wrapping up their 2017 minor round.

Make sure you get out and support all the teams in this last week before finals.

ROUND 18 – LEAGUE VS CENTRAL

Any game you lose is disappointing and Saturday was exactly that. Our ability to spread and get on the loose ball was poor and when we did have the ball our skill level was below standard. These are the obvious negatives but the positive is we wanted a really tight fought contest and one where there wasn’t a lot of room to move and Centrals gave us exactly that. This type of game is perfect for our preparation, I know the outcome wasn’t what we wanted on the scoreboard but the game itself was what we all needed so I would say with 2 weeks to train now, we will be cherry ripe for our first final.

This game was mainly played man on man and we invited that, as that creates a fierce contest in close. As I mentioned our use on the outside was poor and Centrals mids did win the day, but we have lots we can take from that hit out.

Statistically we won plenty of the football and our inside 50’s were ok along with our scoring shots compared to the opposition. Centrals took their opportunities more than us and kicked more efficiently to be the better side on the day and come away with a 20 point win.

That ends what has been a very strong 2017 minor round by the group. To have given ourselves a double chance is what we set out for back in November and that is what we now have, and we have to be proud of that. The top 5 is as close a 5 as I have seen in years so this proves to be an awesome finals series and one we are excited to be a part of.

Preparation is in full swing and the players are committing more time than ever to chase perfection. So over the next 2 weeks the players will be training extremely hard in readiness for what will be an exciting final.

To all the Eagles family that have turned up week in week out all year we thank you very much. You are a critical part of our minor round success and I ask that over the next month you are right there alongside us. Playing against these big clubs I know their numbers will be many but what we have is passion, and with that together I am sure we can achieve success.

ROUND 18 – RESERVES VS CENTRAL

It`s been a long season for the Reserves & the win loss ratio does not reflect on the gains made during the season both individually & collectively as a team nor does the 64 point loss on the weekend.

The first quarter was an even contest between the two sides, however Centrals made the most from our turn overs through the middle of the ground going inside 50 +9 for the quarter to take a 6 point lead at the break 1.3 to 2.3.

By half time we had possessed the ball more than the opposition +25 & +38 marks but with only 14 inside 50 entries is a good indicator that we were not going forward enough with our ball movement but rather side to side & as a result trailed by 28 points 3.6 to 8.4.

The pattern of play continued during the second half of the game were we possessed the ball more than the opposition but were unable to go forward with the same conviction as the past week`s games. This allowed Centrals to lock the ball in their forward half for majority of the game & at the final siren with a +17 inside 50 entries take the game by 64 points.

As stated in the opening comments individually & collectively as a team the Reserves have made considerable gains for the season, at times it can be easy to lose sight of the fundamental role of the Reserves team which is to essentially support & developed future league players & this year has seen a considerable number of debutant players both at League & Reserves levels come through the system & with another good solid preseason under those players belts, provides positive optimism that the Eagles Football Club will remain a strong force in 2018

We now look forward to the second part of the season “Finals Football”.

The Under 18s finished our minor round with a loss, losing to Central Districts by 21 points at Football Park on Saturday night. We started well kicking the first 3 goals for the game but Centrals hit back late in the quarter for 3 of their own. The second quarter was a similar tale with both sides kicking 5 goals and we held a one point lead at half time. Centrals got a break on us in the third quarter kicking 5 goals and restricting us to just the 2 and although the last quarter shows both teams kicked 5 goals apiece, the reality was Centrals were good enough to kick the first 5 goals of the quarter to seal the game and whilst we kicked our goals later in the quarter, but the three quarter time margin was maintained.

Jake Weidemann and Jarrod Miller played well and they were assisted by Tyson Friend, Nick Moore, Grady Armfield and Tom Schmusch.

To this week and we start our finals campaign with a Second Semi Final against South Adelaide, with a spot in the Grand Final on offer for the winner. It will be a tough game as South have had a very good season and accounted for us in both meetings with them during the minor round but we will be doing our best to put on a strong performance. The game will be played at Football Park on Saturday 2 September commencing at 2.10pm.

Our Under 18's have moved into the Grand Final after a thrilling 3 point win over South Adelaide in the Qualifying final last Saturday at Football Park.

It was a tough tight contest all day, South opened a 14 point lead, the largest lead of the match, half way through the last quarter before we gained the ascendancy kicking the last 3 goals of the game. James Rowe lead the way in the midfield having 30 disposals as well as kicking two goals. Isaac Moller also hit the scoreboard registering 4 goals for the game. The Under 18's Grand Final will take place at Adelaide Oval at 10:55am on Sunday the 17th of September prior to the League Preliminary Final.

This weekend our attention turns to our SANFL Macca's League Second Semi Final against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Make sure you get along and support the team as we look to book a spot in the 2017 SANFL Macca's League Grand Final!

UNDER 18’S QUALIFYING FINAL VS SOUTH ADELAIDE

The Under 18’s had a very good win in the Second Semi Final on Saturday, coming from behind late to snatch a 3 point win. It was a tough tight contest all day with nothing really separating the teams at any point – the margins at the breaks were; all tied at quarter time, 6 points in our favour at half time and 7 points our way at three quarter time. South Adelaide started the last quarter with a bang piling on 3 goals in 7 minutes and skipped out to a 14 point lead. We traded goals at the 9 and 10 minute marks and South were able to maintain that lead however we got back into the game by kicking the last 3 goals and we were able to hang on for a 3 point win. James Rowe was very good for us all day and found plenty of the footy and kicked 2 nice goals, Isaac Moller was a good target for us up forward and kicked 4 goals, Sam Michael did a good job in the ruck, Liam Wood, played well on his wing and Jarrod Miller and Sam McKay defended well.

As a result of winning we have the week off and we will then play the winner of South Adelaide and Sturt in the Grand Final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday 17 September . We will be using the fortnight of training to work very hard on preparing ourselves for what we know will be a tough assignment. We would also like to wish all the best to our Senior Coach Mick Godden and the Eagles League team who commence their finals campaign this weekend.

Well the 2017 finals series hasn’t started the way we had planned but the positive is this year we have a chance to right the wrongs a week later not a year.

Starts are always critical and ours was terrible. Our set ups and ball use was well below standard and Port took their chances and made us pay. Whenever you are so far down early it’s very hard to claw your way back. What we have been very good at all year is making comebacks but on this occasion Port were just too good and held us at arm’s length. The players and I know we have let a lot of people down but no more than ourselves. We will own that responsibility and be back fighting hard this Sunday.

After the first quarter debacle the players kept working hard and I do acknowledge Port may have lifted the foot a bit but I am happy the group kept going and in the end the margin stayed similar throughout the day. The experience for the players that have never been there before will be invaluable and I know this will serve us well this weekend and beyond.

As we all know scoring has been too low. Our ability to convert when we are getting the ball in our forward 50 is not good enough so there is no doubt we will be continuing to work hard on this area of our game. Along with that was our execution, this is an area we work on constantly, so with another week on Adelaide Oval I am sure that will be back to the level required very quickly.

What I can say is we are all happy to have some continuity in our training and playing this weekend. With this and the ability to learn from our last game we are all very excited and confident we can get it right and earn the right to fight for the 2017 SANFL Premiership.

I acknowledge the true Eagles member has felt pain recently, but this is not the time to jump off. Your players bust their guts weekly and I know the pain they feel. So please as we know Sturt have a huge following and we need you more than ever. The players always do their best and I know they will be back fighting hard this Sunday against a very good side in Sturt.

UNDER 18’S GRAND FINAL VS STURT

Unfortunately the Under 18’s lost our Grand Final to Sturt on Sunday going down by 43 points. Sturt set up their win with a strong first half and second quarter in particular where they kicked accurately with 5 straight goals whilst we kicked 1 goal 4 points to go in at half time 30 points down. We attacked relentlessly in the third quarter going inside our forward 50 15 times whilst restricting Sturt to just 7 Inside 50’s, but we could only manage 2 goals and Sturt kicked 2 as well, so we were left with a tough assignment at three quarter time. The players kept having a go but ultimately Sturt were too good on the day and were deserved premiers.

James Rowe was a very good player and deserved the Allan Stewart Medal for best player on the ground. He worked incredibly hard for his 35 possessions, 10 clearances and 11 inside 50’s. Our key defenders were under a lot of pressure and Chris Schwarz at Centre Half Back and Sam McKay at Full Back both battled valiantly, Isaac Moller did well up forward with his 10 marks and 3 goals and Jake Weidemann and Cooper Gaffney worked hard in our midfield.

So it was a disappointing last game of 2017, but our year should be looked at through the lens of the whole 20 games we played and the development that has occurred through the course of the year. All the players should be very proud of the contribution they made and I am confident that a number of players will make the transition to senior football in the coming years.

As this is the last match report for the year, I just wanted to thank all the coaches and support staff who give so much of their time and energy to support the players to enable them to be the best they can be, they do a great job and we are very lucky to have those people involved in our club. Similarly, all the Senior Coaching staff, led by Mick Godden do a brilliant job of engaging and communicating with our players and myself, again we are very fortunate to have their commitment and genuine interest in our program and player development. I also want to thank Darren Hams for his unstinting support and work for all of us in the Under 18’s, he does a great job doing all the background work that is so necessary to make our whole program work effectively. Finally, a thank you to all Eagles’ Members and Supporters, your support is very valued and is an important part of our efforts to ensure our club continues to achieve great things in the SANFL.

First I would like to thank all the Eagles people that came along to support the lads all year but in particular on Sunday. I asked in my last report to stay strong with the players and you certainly did that, the football department and Club can’t thank you enough.

Sunday’s game was both disappointing and encouraging. After the Port game all I asked for was a strong competitive effort and the players gave that. Unfortunately we just couldn’t compete in big moments with their more experienced players. We made some bad errors that cost us and they made some plays that we couldn’t do much about.

This season was never a rebuild because within the walls of the Eagles we don’t believe in that. What is was though was a changing of the guard in some ways. The amount of opportunities earned by players that have done the hard work was many and the experience gained through a finals series like this will be in valuable in the years to come. I understand the disappointment having so many minor round wins, then not being able to convert in the finals. The positive was for the first 3 quarters of the year our football was better than anyone and there is no reason for that to not continue and I am sure with another pre-season into our group, along with the experience gained we as Eagles people can look forward to another strong year ahead.

This is the time of year to thank all the people within the Eagles family that do so much. This goes from the players, players’ families, board, backroom staff, office staff, members, volunteers, coaches and our valued partners. Everyone within this organisation strives for success and this year was successful without the ultimate, but for the efforts and passion I can’t thank you enough as you make this club such an amazing place to coach.

From here the football department (starting Sunday night) plan for next season. We must continue to make sure the players are surrounded by passionate and like-minded people and we have a happy and healthy playing group. My job will be to retain important personnel and make sure we can add to our program with players/staff that can help us push forward to finally get the reward every club seeks.

Have an amazing off season with the knowledge the club is going strong and when you all come back we will be ready to continue to provide a strong and consistent brand of football we expect at the Eagles.

Joseph Sinor capped of a remarkable individual season on Friday night taking home the Perce Johns Medal as the 2017 Eagles Club Champion. After previously struggling to break into the midfield and with just 10 League games to his name, a move to half back has seen Joseph thrive at League level playing all 20 games in 2017. Joseph was also awarded the Club's Most Improved Award in addition to his selection in the SANFL Team of the Year and winning the SANFL Powerade Breakthrough Player Award.

Other award winners on the night included Jack Hayes and Paul Stewart who tied for the Jamie Tape Medal as the players MVP whilst Jackson Lee won the Reserves Best and Fairest in a season which he also played some League football. Too see all award winners Click Here.

The Woodville West Torrens Football Club wishes to advise all it members, sponsors and supporters that Michael Wundke and Lachlan McGregor have decided to retire.

Michael, 141 games, a 3 time Ken Farmer Medallist, a 2 time SANFL State representative and one of the premier key forwards over the last decade is moving on to concentrate on the next stage of his life. After finding his way to the Eagles in 2014, Michael’s commitment to the club and playing group has been exceptional and he will always be a part of the Eagles family.

On Michael’s departure General Manager of Football Luke Powell said "as a club we thank Michael for his outstanding service, Michael has been an integral part of this team since 2014 and in this time his goal kicking prowess, character and leadership has shown through. Michael’s ability to perform in big games and bring the best out of his teammates is a testament to the person he is and his values. We wish Michael all the best for in his future endeavours in the next stage of his life and thank him for his outstanding service and commitment."

Lachlan, a dynamic forward and also a 2 time SANFL State representative has after 69 games decided to concentrate on interest outside of football. Lachlan at his best was an excitement machine who gave Eagles supporters plenty of joy since his arrival in 2014. Lachlan thanks the club for believing in his talents and thanks all those involved in his time at the Eagles, where he has made lifelong friends.

We are also delighted to announce the signing of Jarrad Redden & Jake Von Bertouch.

Both Jarrad, 26, 202cm, and Jake 25, 194cm, made a commitment that they would be back after needing a year off to concentrate on their working life careers. As a club we a delighted that both Jarrad and Jake have fulfilled this commitment.

On Jarrad and Jake’s signing Senior Coach Michael Godden said “To secure both Jarrad and Jake, both Eagles juniors back to our football club is very satisfying. Jarrad’s ruck prowess and Jake’s versatility both up forward and down back will have an immediate positive impact on our football club. The coaching group and players are excited to have two quality player and characters back on board this year.”

The Woodville-West Torrens Football Club is excited to announce the signings of Louis Sharrad, Tom Gray and Nathan Rudloff for the 2018 season. All three players spent 2017 at the Port Adelaide Football Club.

On signing the trio Senior Coach Michael Godden said "We are delighted to secure three well established League footballers who, at a young age, will not only be able to make an instant impact at our football Club but also for many years to come. All three men portray tremendous qualities as individual players and people that fits perfectly within our Club culture.”

Originally from Flinders Park Football Club, Louis Sharrad said the transition to Oval Avenue would be made easier given his friendship with 2017 Club Champion Joseph Sinor. The 2017 Reserves Magarey Medallist said he was also looking forward to continuing his career alongside Gray and Rudloff, who are also seeking more opportunity.

Gray, the younger brother of Power star Sam Gray, averages just under a goal a game and can also push up into the centre square to add depth to the midfield rotation. Tom will look to continually develop himself to become an elite midfielder and looks forward to helping the Eagles push for success.

Tea Tree Gully product Rudloff has been a steady influence in defence, having the ability to play on small and medium-sized forwards since making his debut in 2016. Nathan will strengthen the already integral defensive back six, with the ability to push higher up the ground.

The Club is also excited to welcome back to Oval Avenue Vinnie Rugolo, who has been appointed as Reserves and Development coach for 2018.

Rugolo, who played 81 League games and booted 105 goals for the Eagles between 2003 and 2007, has been playing and coaching for Goolwa/Port Elliot in the Great Southern Football League.

On his appointment, Vinnie said “I am excited to work with such a promising young group and look forward to developing not only the young players at the club but also my coaching ability in such a wonderful program. I thank the club for an outstanding opportunity.”
