Re: Port game review
Adelaide now review
DESCRIBING Woodville-West Torrens as an enigma is probably apt.
Apart from an honest contest, it can be difficult to predict just what to expect from the Eagles.
Mostly because it is difficult to predict just what 21 they will put on the park each week.
Arguably no club is impacted on by the requirement of Adelaide's AFL clubs than the Eagles and it can be a mystery for the club as to who is available each week.
Today was a prime example. The Eagles retrieve Nick Salter and Jay Schulz from the Power and they have a significant contribution in the 14-point victory over the Port Adelaide Magpies at Alberton.
With Schulz in attack alongside Scott Welsh and Adam Grocke, Eagles coach Mick Godden had the luxury of using Nick Salter effectively in the midfield where is presence relaxes the pressure on Luke Powell and Justin Cicolella.

''It is difficult to settle what we are trying to do but I'm realistic and I knew that when I took the job on,'' Eagles coach Michael Godden said.
''We have got to adapt quickly as possible and it is awkward for the players more so.
''The AFL players have such a good attitude and I'm proud of how they go about it.''
Full credit to the Magpies though for their ability to stand up to the Eagles and respond to the severe test of character. Not that the Magpies coaching staff or players care for that. They have tired of putting themselves in winning positions and failing to deliver the premiership points.
Midway through the third term the home side hit the front when Jarrod Young goaled and Godden moved Welsh to defence to help stem the tide.

Re: Port game review
The best way, in my opinion, I can describe the win today is 'gutsy'.
We had lost Lane earlier with a hamstring, then Schulz was off with what look to be a groin but had to go on when Wright did his hamstring.
From a selfish point of view I'm very pleased that the Power cannot find a place for Schulz or Salter, we will have them every week.
Best players from presentation tonight:-
Reserves
1st - Giuffreda
2nd - McMahon
3rd - Staple
4th - Miles
5th - Rayner
League
1st - Cicolella
2nd - Powell
3rd - Salter
4th - Schulz
5th - Geddes
The bye has come at a good time, a lot of very sore, limping boys tonight.
We will have Jimmy Stewart & Treebs back for Westies in a fortnight.

Re: Port game review
Ok, there's all that talent up forward, but the kicking to them was well below par. Yes it was a gutsy win, Eagle014, as I knew Port wouldn't be shaken off easy.
Cica played really well; virtually back to his 2006 best today. Salter was in everything early, but had a bit of a quiet patch during the middle part of the match.

Re: Port game review
An entertaining game. The awesome foursome (Cicca, Powelly, Lewie and Parry) again won the centre and gave our forwards continuous opportunities. And, wasn’t great to see the talent in the forward line? Overall, we played well in patches and with Treebs and Jimmy due back shortly, the back half of the season looks promising. Geddes and Rimmo have found their niche in the backline and Salter’s time on the ball was solid. I think we still have issues re the second centre rotation, we seem unable to get the quick clearing kick into the forward line. Also, we need a CHB, Macca struggled in parts. Perhaps Biglands or Miles will eventually fill this role.
In the ressies I was impressed by Rayner and McMahon. They may see some league game time before season’s end.

Re: Port game review
Thanks for the best players Eagle 14.Lucky for us we have the bye Seconds players injured and league players injured once again.
We need to find a big back man the skipper is not up to a CHB spot anymore .Perhaps he should play as an on baller
I should ad a magpie co worker told me we only won due to Shulz .he is fast becoming an Eagle cult hero .but I responded to this magpie Fan Cloke kept u guys in the game.

Re: Port game review
Guys, the captain of Broadview in the AM league is a CHB - has been in the best list each week - is playing in the state team this weekend for SA against WA - is a fraction taller than his brother - and is just waiting for a phone call from Gods. So, come-on Gods give Christian Grocke a call.

Eagles vs Port Adelaide
By Peter Argent
Despite giving their supporters heart palpitations in the second half, the Eagles held on for a sixth win for the season against Port Adelaide in this trip up past the Cheltenham Cemetery on a winter’s Sunday afternoon.
Dominant early, and with a number of marking targets in attack Woodville West Torrens had 10 scoring shot to three in the opening term, created a handy 22-point lead at this break.
Both sides kicked four goals in the second, but the Magpies controlled the majority of the third term. The home side grabbed the lead, before a couple of late goals to Nick Salter and Jay Schulz gave the Eagles an 11-point advantage going into the final quarter.
The Magpies had their chances early in the last term, but fittingly it was best on ground, Justin Cicolella’s goal that sealed the result after a simple turnover. Along with being tough at the contested ball, creating opportunities and space for team mates, he also kicked two important goals.
Key forwards, the AFL listed Salter and Schulz, along with the returning Adam Grocke, kicked nine goals between them, working well as a trio.
Luke Powell produced his usual industrious and hard working effort all game, giving his side drive out of the middle, while Salter and Schulz’s experience was crucial in the win. Brad Geddes played one of his best games in defence.
Notably a lot of other players fell in and out of the game.
Laconic wingman Angus Rowntree also pushed forward and kicked a couple of majors as well.
Scott Welsh was pushed up the ground and behind the ball in the third quarter, when the Eagles lost some momentum and gained a number of important possessions.
Coach Michael Godden suggested he was happy to take the victory, while it wasn’t a fantastic effort.
“Our consistency has been an issue over the last month,” Godden said. “We were in control of the game at half time, but many of the group didn’t have an impact in the second half. “The rest has certainly come at the right time and this will now give us a chance to reload for the second half of the season.”
Currently in fourth position on the League ladder, the Eagles are on equal points with both Glenelg and Norwood above them, although the Bays have a game in hand. Only percentage separates them.
After a bye next week, Woodville-West Torrens has an important month ahead.
Firstly they take on the Bloods at City Mazda Stadium, followed by North at Prospect, and then Sturt at Woodville, followed by the success story of the last six weeks, Norwood at Coopers Stadium.
Expected to return to league ranks after a long period, former Crow 200cm big man Rhett Biglands complained on groin soreness on Friday and was a late withdrawal, being replaced by Peter Hoban.
Over the next month, up to 13 other players will return from injury or come into calculations from the State under 18’s programme.

Re: Port game review
Disappointing that Biglands couldn't play against Port - we'll certainly need his height next game if Willitts plays in attack for Westies especially in light of Macca's poor form.
Interesting to note that Hentschell will be resuming shortly after the bye and will play at least 3 Seconds games before playing at least 2 league games (qualifying for the finals). At his near best, would fill the CHB position or back pocket on the talls but, if he only plays as well as 2009, then no better than what we got.
Hope Vince's ankle stays stuffed for one more week so he doesn't waste his one game suspension playing for Centrals Seconds. Let's hope big Daniel Stewart at the Power holds on to his spot so Jay Schulz stays with us for 2 more qualifying games.
In awe of Cicca, heading towards 300 games with his present form. Of the middle rung players, thought Geddes played well, Jacky got involved and chased (first good signs). Sad that Jarrad Wright's hamstring went especially after picking up useful touches early. Hoban is making surprising progress. However, James Rimmington and Daniel's positions are not secure yet

Hopefully we can get Hentschel for five or more games as CHB is the position we are lacking and it can free McKenzie into the midfield during finals. As soon as he shows any form he will be back in the Crows so really we will only get decent use out of him if he qualifies to play finals.
Vince should play in the game against West even though he is playing in South's reserves this week because the Crows play in the second week of the AFL's split round. Now we just need to work out where he can fit in another 3 games.
