Mawson and Pearce injured. Bummer! Otherwise lineup looks good. Hope Toumpas brings his kicking boots with him - “we’re the boys in yellow Jimmy!”

Re: Eagles v North August 13 Maughan Thiem Kia oval
Eagles had way more of the play in the first half but couldn't capitalise. Broke down at Half Forward in the last half as North were able to often mark and then rebound the length of the field. Our runner use to mop up the loose balls across half back, but had no one there today and North carried the length of the field several times for easy goals. We have many short players who can not kick 40m and we lacked a few shepherds on the goal line which could've given us a chance. As is known, the older players are now right at the end, and the young players not quite there yet. A good challenge for the next coach. There is definitely something there to work with.

The 3 re-signed Bs were good, especially DBR. Also Beecken, Rowe, Menzel, Dawkins, d’Aloia. Agree that we have players to work with. Trust the Club to pick a good coach and the recruits we need.

I think it comes down to a lack of height and talent. Beaten by an ordinary team today. Heard that everyone has signed on for next year but Toumpas and that includes Troy Menzel. Not sure if true or not but need some off season recruiting to be competitive next year.

I was thinking this myself during the game. At least 3 times we had set shots from within the 50m arc. They kicked the ball straight but couldn't clear the line. That's three missed goals. Clear the line and we win the game.
Having come to terms we are just not good enough this year I am approaching each of these games looking for any positives and not simply whether we won.
For so many of our players I see a glimpse of talent here and there but they just can't sustain it which is why I think we can match it with many of the teams early but then we fall away. Herbert looks like a smooth mover and Watson showed something (despite being one of the people who can't kick 50m). Every time that Beattie gets hold of the ball he looks classy but he just lack the consistency. Nicholls adds a bit of spark every so often but for the majority of the match doesn't touch the ball. Loved the intensity and scrap that Dawson brought even though he is too undersized to play as a key defender (sidenote - I thought he was an onballer in the reserves??).
All these players will get better and better with each season. The problem is that this growth will be slow and we will never be competitive if we carry too many of these players in the team at the same time who 'show promise' but aren't quite ready. There is a huge danger of years in the wilderness if we don't even out playing list to close the experience gap between our veterans (many of whom will retire and youngsters. We need 5-6 players in the 22-25 year old range who can immediately contribute.
Why wasn't Mawson playing today? For mine, he has been the surprise packet in terms of what he has brought this year. He wasn't listed as injured in the last injury update of 31/07 and with no game last week not sure what happened. Also where was Firns in the reserves? Hoping he hasn't spat the dummy and walked like a few others..........

Jimmy has been hit hard by injuries this year that has definitely impacted his ability to contribute. He's one I'd expect to seriously weigh up playing on next year. I would love for the club to be able to keep Menzel. He should have kicked three goals today. If he could stay injury free I think he could easily kick 30-40 goals next season. Hoping he gives it one last crack.

Re: Eagles v North August 13 Maughan Thiem Kia oval
Agree Titan. Poole won a Reserves Magarey prior to becoming one of our most important players. An example to many of how good a footballer you can become with dedication. It takes opportunity and then time. It also takes a whole of team work ethic. Then a sprinkling of class and a bit of luck. These young players all look to have the ability to become good league players, which shows the system is working. Hard work and more hard work over pre-season. We need to recruit the hard working types. Is there another Adam Grocke out there?

I was talking about this player yesterday in the seconds number 57 young guy .
I think he’s wasted in the backline a put him on a wing . He raises the eyes before he delivers the ball something that’s needed

Re: Eagles v North August 13 Maughan Thiem Kia oval
That was a good first half where the Eags should have been well up at half time. The second half was so frustrating. The unforced turn overs were bad. North have some big, bodied players and a couple with massive pace that won the match for them.
We were totally annihilated when the ball arrived at half forward. I hope we have Rowey stitch up for a long contract.
edit. I liked Weckerts game in the 2's.

Possibly - our Wings have been a real weakness for us this year in the League
As has our half forward line, ruck......

Re: Eagles v North August 13 Maughan Thiem Kia oval
No argument our ruck yesterday appeared to win taps midfield couldn’t get the ball out of the centre . CHF yes not enough tall position players and need a bigger experienced ruckThe Barton wrote:Mickyj wrote:He could be I think he’d be better on the wing just my thoughtsThe Barton wrote:Mickyj wrote:I was talking about this player yesterday in the seconds number 57 young guy .

And to many balls going to half forward to 3 north players or as a bright fan said yesterday our players are letting their opponents run away and forwards not defending to keep the ball in the forward area
Whybother I think this is what you were talking about

Re: Eagles v North August 13 Maughan Thiem Kia oval
Yep Mickyj. It seems to me that our forwards dont defend the ball in the forward line. Just zone off, which gives the equivalent of a 30m kick to the opposition.

North are a very average side and there are rumblings about their coach.
