Re: Eagles v Centrals 18 Jun Maughan Thiem Kia oval
Where's Dane MacFarlane at with his footy ?
His best is good enough for him to be a very good SANFL league footy player. His speed offers us something that is important to the team.
But he seems to be struggling probably since returning from injury late last year.
Part of me thinks that Sheedy is playing him out of position in the backlines. Not sure he has the required defensive mindset.
I feel like his best position would be on the wing.
Thoughts?

Like you, Titan, my first impression of Macfarlane was that he was quick - and then noticed how easily he was getting run down from behind. He's not quick for his size. He gives you that impression because his first reaction on getting possession is to run often when the better decision often is to give off by hand or foot (lacks "vision"). At present, if we had a full list, he isn't in our best 24 players. Hope he can pick up the tempo of SANFL footy and become a valued Eagle.

Re: Eagles v Centrals 18 Jun Maughan Thiem Kia oval
I thought McFarlane has been pretty good this year. Has played a reasonable amount of midfield. Both he and Hardie have stepped up from last season and contributed. I think he has improved his disposal - which was my biggest criticism of him last year - and like how he takes the game on with his speed. We do have a number of players currently on the outer, either through injury or form, who will be vying for the same spot as him, so he'll need to be in his best form to make the cut, but I think he's been ok this season prior to injury.

Only a matter of time. I guess we're all going to catch it. Only consolation is that catching it now may offer Sheeds more immunity in lead-up to Finals. Anyone know the football background of Troy Hall.
Went out to Woodville Oval tonight to see Eags train. Nobody there and guessed they are training elsewhere to rehabilitate the muddy surface.

I'm hoping all the best for Sheeds and anyone that has the virus. Some comments I read on sites suggest its like a flue. In some cases maybe but from personal experience it can be serious. I was in the RAH for a week in January and my wife 2 weeks. My grand kids had it but symptoms were not very severe . I still suffer from it so any players with it may suffer in some way. Their fit and young so may have some immunity going forward.

Re: Eagles v Centrals 18 Jun Maughan Thiem Kia oval
Connor targets second AFL tilt
ANDREW CAPEL
“CONNOR Ballenden has put his AFL mid-season draft disappointment behind him and is using
a former Eagle as inspiration to fulfil his dreams.
Surprisingly overlooked at the mid-year player lottery after fielding strong interest from
Hawthorn and Carlton, former Brisbane big man Ballenden said he was now focused on
following in the footsteps of Tyson Stengle, who turned the same draft pain into a SANFL
premiership and one of 2022’s feelgood football stories.
“Missing out on being drafted was pretty disappointing because I believe I am good enough to
get back in the (AFL) system,” the 23-year-old said. “There was obviously a lot of chat about
the possibility of me being picked up mid- season but, for whatever reason, things didn’t pan
out the way I wanted them to.
“Initially there was that real disappointment but Tyson was in a similar situation last year and
look how well things have turned out for him.
“Understanding that, that there could be other opportunities, has helped me navigate through
the situation.”
Small forward Stengle, a former Richmond and Adelaide AFL player who parted ways with the
Crows following a series of off-field indiscretions, reignited his career last year in the SANFL
with Woodville-West Torrens.
After being shunned at the 2021 mid-season draft, Stengle played a major role in the Eagles
winning a second straight premiership before being snapped up by Geelong as a free agent at
the end of the year.
He has enjoyed a stellar season for the Cats, kicking 23 goals.
“Tyson is a good example of what can happen and the opportunities that can open up,’’ said key
forward/ruckman Ballenden, a man mountain at 199cm and 102kg who joined the Eagles at the
end of last year after being interviewed by seven of the eight standalone SANFL clubs. Only
West Adelaide did not speak to him.
Ballenden said another former Eagle, tall utility Jack Hayes, went through years of draft
disappointment before getting an opportunity, at age 26, and performing well for St Kilda this
year before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Ballenden, who played three AFL games for Brisbane in four years on the list from 2018-21, is
uncertain whether the price he put on his head – an 18-month contract rather than the
traditional six for the mid-season draft – hurt his draft chances after he interviewed with the
Hawks and Blues and passed medical testing with flying colours.
“That’s an unknown,’’ he said. “If I’d gone for the basic six months then maybe someone would
have given me an opportunity but I opted for 18 because me and my partner (Alex) have just
moved down from Queensland and set ourselves up well in Adelaide.
“To move states again we decided it was 18 months or nothing because as much as I want to play
AFL again I’m really happy in Adelaide, love playing for the Eagles and hopefully can help the
club push towards another strong finals campaign.”
Ballenden’s draft dreams were dashed when Hawthorn selected giant teenage ruckman Max
Ramsden from the Sandringham Dragons at pick six and Carlton chose a key defender,
Glenelg’s Sam Durdin at 13, rather than a ruckman following an injury to star backman Jacob
Weitering.
“There were certain situations where I was going to fit in but things didn’t end up going my
way, so we move on,” Ballenden said.
“I’ve had a good start to the season with the Eagles and still believe my best football is in front
of me.”

Always rated Aron. Good to see him back after a long break.
Connor Ballenden and Clay Cameron will be a massive loss. Redden was not very active about the ground.

If you were going to pick one game to lose from the last 3 weeks, it was this one. Any indication of how bad Ballenden’s injury is? Fingers crossed he’s back for finals?
