Best win for the Eagles for past 2 years considering
1. we were going down the gurgler re form and finals chances while Norwood were the form team
2. Norwood dominated first half and should have put us away.
With sheer will, because our systems still seem to be astray, we clawed our way back into the game and eventually ran away with it. We did well at the centre bounces all day, but the system and ease with which Norwood moved downfield from defence almost killed us in the first half - the open spaces in the forward lines for them and running free players was incredible. Our superior grunt and effort overcame this but if we could also develop a better system for some easy goals, we would take some beating.
Overheard Angus Rowntree, who played first half in Seconds, saying that he had some posterior knee soreness, pretty standard from the hamstring donor site in Anterior Cruciate ligament repairs and hopefully able to present for a full game in Seconds next week. Luke Powell did another big job in the Centre today - stats may not show it but Luke's body work was great. Many good desperation acts by other Eagles players today when they put their body on the line. Great stuff!!
Frustrating to see opposition full backs at kick-ins, being able to repeatedly run out from the goalsquare 20 metres then handball to their fellow back pocket and deliver their kick inside their forward line. We should be able to sometimes do the same but instead take the risky approach of Byron Summner doing risky precision 30 metre passes which usually cost 1-2 goals /game.
We seem to cop the 2 AFL clubs when they have a near full quota of AFL players whereas it has been an easier match for other Clubs when they play them with depleted lists. This week for instance, we face Adelaide again with a near full strength team which today thrashed South. Will need to follow up this win with Adelaide scalp to make it count.

Great to see the boys really take the game on in the second half and get the result. Yeah we kicked out on the full a few times and there were a few holding the balls against us but they were trying to make something happen. Really impressed with Appleton again today, has certainly grabbed his opportunity and looks right at home.

Re: Eagles V Norwood 2:10 PM Sat 12 Jul Maughan Thiem Hyundai oval
I internally spat the dummy at half time. We were really poor in that first half and I thought Norwood would come out in that 3rd quarter and put 10 goals between us by 3 quarter time with a strong breeze. Standing in the rain during half time wasn't at all appealing and if there was an exit closer by, I might have just pulled the keys out of the pocket and headed straight to the car.
As it turned out, the rain stopped, the wind stopped, Norwood stopped, and the Eagles got going.
The first half can't be dismissed, because there were a number of players that should have been pulled from the ground and put straight back to the Reserves they were that poor. Sumner, Ainger, Lewis, Borholm amongst others were hopeless. It was all left to Jarrad, Von Bertouch, Giuffreda and Grocke.
The 2nd half it was a case of all played well. Borholm took some great marks around the ground. Sumner sparked from the back lines and Ainger kicked a great goal from 50. The young players in Schwarz, Sinor, Martyn and Blesing played their part. Schwarz in particular offered some grunt in the muddy middle. Templeton was very good.
Besides the general lift in intensity, moving Wundke to CHF and playing further up the ground was the match winning move. He was very good and despite not getting a lot of the ball, Mcgregor played his part putting pressure on and keeping the ball in the forward lines, playing as the leading forward.
At half time I was ready to write off Godden, with players like Goldsworthy playing Reserves, but he made some moves and got his team going and got the result. Hugely important in the scheme of the season, being 4 points clear in the top 3 and hopefully a momentum shift overall to take in to the last part of the season.
