Re: pre season 2013
So give us a rundown on how preseason is going:
Has Goldsworthy improved his "engine" to play a more frequent on ball role?
Has Von Bertouch bulked up?
Any injuries or surgery absentees?
Has Lachlan Carey got the firness to play the occasional onballer role?
How is Byron Sumner looking? Last year he began grossly overweight.
Are youngsters Appleton, Schwarz and Hayes looking at ease with the step up in training?

Re: pre season 2013
All look pretty trim - no fatties. It is really hard at this stage to make a call on any player as to the improvement in his engine. Von Bertouch looks to have bulked up from last year and appears to show a lot more enthusiasm.
Injury front: There is always 10 - 12 in the injury group. Raymond is recovering from a hernia op. but appears to be going OK. Charlie Rae did a shoulder at training and has had an op. and will miss six months. Matthew Jacquier also has had a shoulder op. and will miss about the same amount of time. Lewey is struggling with groin problems - doesn,t look good. Kirk has a hamstring problem and is coming along slowly. Some players are doing modified training eg. Parry and Powell. Haven't seen enough of Lachlan Carey to make a call on his skills. The other night he got cleaned up at training - blood flowing from face, don't know actual damage. Byron is looking very fit and appears to be really enjoying training. Scott Blesing is still training - in a war of attrition with westies. Luke Thompson's older brother (Scott) was at training Weds. night. Lots of last years U18 at training.
Matthew Appleton has definitely got bigger across the shoulders.
Usually on Weds. nights there is a 20 min trial game - those who have played league football Vs the others. The others made up of mainly U18s beat the league last time.
Ainger is a big,big man, looks very impressive.
All main players have been sighted.

Re: pre season 2013
Bad news about Lewis's groin injury. Considering he is one of only 3 proven on ballers that we have (others being Powell and Rowntree) it's not good.
? whether Byron Sumner, Allmond, Joyce can move into the midfield. We might be dreaming to expect these 3 to be amongst the best SANFL midfielders next year.
Kane Mitchell, a free running wingman-type, can he play as effectively in tight as an onballer?
Has the recruiting finished or have we a final "clincher", a classy proven,on-baller to land.

I agree 100% Premiers. Our engine room is very thin and any injuries to Lewis,Powell or Gus and we are in trouble. We would be behind Nwd, west, Sth, CD with our midfield depth, hell maybe even a couple of other clubs could be in front of us. If we cant win the ball then our big offseason signing wont be kicking any goals.I keep dreaming that the club will announce a tough midfielder has signed......but I don't think they will.
Only hope a couple of other guys will be given a chance and will step up. Would love to see Sumner given a chance.
Thou I don't agree with the Sanfl baby sitting Afl players ( compromises the Sanfl) I feel we did take the correct player in Mitchell. We need all the midfield help we can get.

Re: pre season 2013
I can't understand why we don't recruit a genuine midfielder. It's a glaring weakness after watching all games last year. Now we've got this guy in the draft it probably won't happen but can see him playing a few games for us early then once Port are out of contention will play most of the back half with them and definitely no availability for finals

Appleton was hugely impressive in the 18's GF win. Is he the type that could step straight in to league footy?

Re: pre season 2013
Quite sure recruiting is complete. A couple of other SANFL players were interested in coming to the Eagles but not enough bikkies in the barrel.
Matthew Appleton has a good chance, good engine but not enough penetration with his kicking, should be given a good chance along with Angus Poole to show what they have got in trial matches.
