what a challenge the eagles face this week a dangerous and emerging Magpie unit with the eagles once again being at the mercy of injuries and the inevitable movements of the AFL yo-yo. Great o have Vince with the guys on Saturday but a shame to see Petrenko go. Speaking of Petrenko I thought his game against the legs was a beauty ! He was prepared to take risks early using a combination of strength and skill to emerge amongst the best. i really liked the fact he took it up to the Norwood players on their turf. Well done all the best

Disappointed with the results @ Alberton with the underage teams. U16s were in it at 3 qtr time and then stopped and same thing happened with the u18s.

11 changes for the under 18's according to what Shane Grimm said back the club tonight, due to college footy and call ups to the ressies...certainaly doesn't work in your favour.

Entertaining match and good win. Could have had any of 12 players in our best 3, such was the TEAM contribution except for Tiller and possibly Rimington.
Surely Tiller must be a better player than what he's showing otherwise we made another recruiting bungle. He has hardly had a pre-season, missed almost all of the trials,then picked up another injury early in the season. Today, he didn't chase, nor present but there hasn't been anyone in the Seconds to replace him. Perhaps with Grocke and Hentschell available this week, it will give him an opportunity to get a fitnes base in the Reserves over 2-3 weeks and come back as a better player in the latter half of the year.
Batley - thought this kid was class when saw him in the Seconds last year. Classy mover, pace and poise, the type AFL scouts will be watching.

Disappointing to see Jarrad Irons's form has dropped away from his good performance Rd 1 Port Power to the average performances in the Eagles

Don't know what to make of Day? Always thought him as too slow, poor decision- making but Godden has shown confidence and he has slowly improved with more responsibility.
Welsh, Guilhaus, Kite - we've spent our dollars badly but Parry, what a ripper player, makes our players walk tall to have such a classy, strong ruckman roaming the ground - worth every cent.

What a team effort by the eagles they were prepared to continue to work as a team despite the injuries and changes made for the Port game. They were playing a Port team which unlike the recent past (last season) came into this game with some confidence and form . I particularly liked the efforts of Treeby and Powell but we had many contributors around the ground. Would love to see more Eagles supporters attend games especially at Woodville

But on a good day with all our best players we would have won, we were good in patches, but didn't continue with it in the last qtr.

A sad thing to say we had over 3000 there yesterday.And that was a good crowd !!
How do the club bring the people back beat centrals and west then they may come back !!

Despite changes & injuries a great team effort again boys.
Mention must be made of Craig Parry, playing under difficult circumstances
he rucked tirelessly against Port's two big men Meikeljohn & Maric, Paz you're all class.
Picking only 5 this week will be very difficult.

Fortunately, for the Eagles, St Michaels which used to be an ordinary football college till the late nineties, improved to be one of the better college teams since 2000 and we've reaped the rewards.

Well that would be true .I wonder how many st michaels kids come to us and port adelaide ? I think they would get kids from both areas (well i know my old neighbours used to go there from taperoo but that was a few years ago).

Senior coach said it wasnt an excuse to for a loss in seconds or under 18's (saturday night If I remember correctly).

With the under 18's being focussed on pretty heavily these days I have often wondered if the whole college thing compromises the quality of the competition. Anyone know what the go is in the TAC Cup....do the kids playing in that have to drop 'back' to college teams once the season starts?

Coaches Comments - Rnd 6

Michael Godden – Senior Coach Report

After the great announcement of Unleash Solar Oval @ Woodville it was great to see over 3000 supporters here to see the team put in a solid performance against a Port Adelaide group that is fast becoming a very good side that is hard to beat.

The game started with both teams having some good and bad moments which reflected in the close quarter time score. The second quarter was a much better one for us, we moved the ball freely, showed far greater desperation to the contested ball and at times we looked like we could take the game away.

To Port’s credit they fought back hard in the third, outscoring us easily, even though the inside 50 count was equal. If we had used the ball better going forward I think things could have been a lot different, we had 4 clear movements inside 50 in which we kicked the ball straight to the opposition which was obviously just terrible decision making and something we will need to continue to work on. Finally in the last quarter we started to play a bit more direct and give our forwards a chance, which ultimately reflected on the scoreboard and saw us run out winners by 19pts.

What the start of this season has told me is we definitely have something to work with. Our endeavour is fantastic but our execution is still way under my expectations and against sides like Centrals this weekend we need to improve it and improve it quickly.

Finally I can confidently say the group is ready to put our best foot forward this weekend, because to be the best team in this competition you need to beat the best and clearly Centrals have shown again they are in very good shape. We have a lot of improvement in us and we feel we are ready to put that on the park on Saturday.




Bob Cross – Reserves Coach Report

Last Saturday the Eagles Reserves were faced with the challenge of an “in form Port Adelaide’ o during the week we focused on the areas we will needed to improve to take the points.

Our first quarter started slowly and it took us a little time to settle but once we did I felt that we were playing the type of football we had been aiming for. We went to the first break trailing by 8 points and I was confident if we could improve our skills and start to hit more targets with both hand and foot we would have every chance of winning.

The second quarter was similar footy and while we strung together a couple of good passages, Port just had the edge and again out scored us by 6 points.

The second half was very disappointing with Port’s team work and movement far superior compared to our, kick and hope style of play. We were outscored by a massive 64 Points.

While we have a very young group and they are still learning, we must aim to play four quarters, improve our team work and skills or face the prospect of these results being common place.

There was some bright lights out of a very disappointing result with Jake Fairclough our best player, his reaction to being overlooked for League selection was outstanding. Cameron Sutcliffe showed signs of the type of football we know his is capable of and Brad Geddes is starting to return to the form of last year.

The next couple of weeks now become very important to our season with the trip to Elizabeth next Saturday our first hurdle.

As the coach of this talented group, I know my role is to continue to work to improve the players’ skills and understanding of our structures, but more importantly place more emphasis on “Playing as a Team.’ This will better prepare them for the next phase in their football careers.



Shane Grimm – Under 18’s Coach Report

Our Round 6 clash against Port was always going to be an interesting one due to the fact that the College Football program has now begun, which means Clubs will be without a number of players for the next 3 months. The positive to come out of this is that we now have the opportunity to play some players who have been training hard since November last year to see if they have what it takes to play at this level.

The first quarter was disappointing on a few levels but the main area of disappointment was the lack of intensity and effort all over the ground and we went into the quarter time break trailing by 18 points.

Our second quarter was a lot better and we were more competitive all over the ground. Our ball movement forward was very good and our Forwards started to look dangerous. We also started to get on top at stoppages and we looked like we had turned the corner, but we let ourselves down with a lack of effort on a few occasions that turned into goals for the Magpies.

Our main focus after half time was to try and get ourselves back into the game early in the 3rd quarter and continue to use the ball effectively going forward, our forward line looked dangerous all day but unfortunately we did not provide them with good enough service on enough occasions. Our midfield pressure was not as strong as it should have been which meant that our defenders were under a lot of pressure when Port were entering their forward 50, which ultimately became too much for them.

Port Adelaide completely over ran us in the final term and unfortunately we had too many players who did not put up enough resistance. There are definitely a few areas of concern going forward and we have to make sure that we address these in the coming weeks so that we can continue with our good start to the season.

Unfortunately Joseph Sinor broke his ankle during the final term and will be out of action for quite a while. Joe had been playing some good football over the past 3 weeks and Saturday’s game was probably his best for the year so far. We wish Joe a speedy recovery and we will continue to support him through his rehabilitation, until he gets back on the field.



Darren Hams – Under 16’s Coach Report

In what was our last game of the Under 16 Program we were keen to keep the momentum going after a good win against Norwood the week before.

In a tight first half we were winning the ball in the midfield thru Riley Knight and William Northeast but were unable to make the most of our opportunities up forward first game player Jack Hayes was making a presence, Jack Enright and Sam Watson also began well in defence and repelled many of Port Adelaide’s attack. The major break came along and we were able to take a slight lead going into the second half.

In what was a shoot out, the third term provided some attacking footy with Port kicking 7 goals and ourselves kicking 6 goals for the term, for us to win the game we needed to improve on our defensive action, which had been an issue in most of our games this year.

Karl Milde worked tirelessly in Ruck all day but unfortunately Port Adelaide kept up the momentum of hard running attacking footy in the last quarter in which we were unable to go with them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the lads for their efforts throughout the program, in terms of win/losses it was not as successful as we would have liked but the Under 16 program is to develop players for the next level of football.

Woodville West Torrens have overrun Port Adelaide with a five goal final term




WOODVILLE-WEST Torrens found enough firepower to kick clear of Port Adelaide at Woodville.

The Eagles trailed by two points at three quarter time but kicked five goals to two in the final term to secure a 19-point victory.

Without injured key forwards Trent Hentschel and Adam Grocke, the Eagles were spearheaded in attack by Lee Staple, Leigh Treeby and, late in the game, Bernie Vince.

"We felt that we had to kick 15 goals so it was good to get there," Eagles coach Michael Godden said.

"Obviously it's the area we've changed the most in the last month and it will probably change again next week when we get a couple of other players back.

"We just had to construct something and our backs and mids did a good job of getting it in there enough.

"The Eagles' experienced midfielders controlled the corridor for most of the match, forcing the erratic Magpies wide.

Vince, Luke Powell, Angus Rowntree, Luke Jarrad and Scott Lewis all finished with more than 25 disposals as they overpowered Port's undersized onballers.

The Eagles have escaped from an injury-tested opening five games with a 4-1 record but will need to get some key players back fast if they are to challenge Central District and West in the next fortnight.Port, which dropped to 2-4 and is still looking for its first win away from Alberton this season, was again left to lament an inconsistent performance.

The Magpies controlled the midfield for the majority of the opening term, with Mark Dolling, Shayne Biacsi and Mitch Banner starting well.

Nathan Batley made his debut for the Eagles and kicked a brilliant running goal with his first kick.

But Tim Milera twice gave Pat Giuffreda the slip in attack and entering time on in the first, Port's lead was out to 20 points.

The Eagles looked twice as dangerous with Craig Parry in ruck and with Staple firing early in attack, were able to kick five goals to one in the second term to take a 16-point lead into the main break.

The up and down nature of the game continued in the third as the Magpies out-possessed the Eagles 113-74 in a four goal to one quarter.

Dolling lifted his workrate to earn 11 disposals for the term and Ivan Maric kicked two goals as Port looked to build a lead.

Another Maric goal early in the final term had Port's lead out to eight, but Jarrad began to dominate on the wing and Vince outmarked Luke Slattery several times as the Eagles kicked away.

Port coach Tony Bamford was furious at his loose checking midfielders, who gave up two crucial goals by failing to pick up their opponents in attack."Midfield accountability was really poor.

"That let us down," he said. "I was really happy with the start of the game and obviously the third quarter as well but we just can't seem to string four quarters together."
