Re: Eagles V Bulldogs Maughan Thiem Kia Oval September 4
Couldn't ask the squad to be better placed for finals. McFarlane and Cameron back in the Reserves. Max Litster named on the half back flank to debut after being one of the best for the State U19's. No injuries!?! Loved the desperation of the likes of Beecken (smother in the last quarter) and Haylock (the tackle as Sturt were streaming inside 50, the follow up handball and end result goal to Eagles) last week.
It's an unusual situation. Normally the reigning premiers would be the talk of the town, sitting as we are as we enter September with a fit squad and a double chance sewn up, but Glenelg's incredible season has them clear favourites and a clear expectation that if they can go through the minor round undefeated, they shouldn't lose when it counts.
Last year we rested Jack Hayes in the last minor round and there would be opportunity to do that again this year with key players. With the Reserves guaranteed of at least playing the first two weeks of finals, that gives the squad depth should injuries occur during finals. A good position to be in. Go Eagles!

Lets have a look at some of the statistical features of this game:
-This was the first time that Central have lost by 100+ in a match since Rd 14 1992 Glenelg 30.19 (199) Central 10.14 (74)
-The 1.4 (10) was the lowest ever score Central have been on at 3QT, beating 1.5 (11) in Rd 18 1964 and Rd 15 1989
-The 2.6 (18) was the third lowest score by Central District
-Previous lowest score by Central at Woodville was 5.8 (38) vs 18.14 (122) Rd 13 2008
-2.6 (18) is the equal lowest score at Woodville, with the one scored by Glenelg in Rd 20 2011
-Previous highest winning margin by the club vs Central was 88 pts, 21.9 (135) vs 7.5 (47) Rd 11 2016
There's more but that's the ones that stand out the most.

Amazing stats Spelly. Team stats yesterday amazing as well.
410 disposals to 278
235 kicks to 153
117 marks to 67 but contested marks were 9 to 6. Just shows how open our play was.
Some of our movement was awesome. I hope we keep it up. The handball was as good as you could see anywhere.

Was a very good win, cannot name one player who did not contribute.
Perhaps von Bertouch could do better and hopefully his current form isn't deliberate as I was told by a friend close to Norwood that he has been approach by them regarding switch

The Eagles again finished the minor round with the best percentage in the league - an excellent result considering how many top players we lost from last year's premiership team.

Re: Eagles V Bulldogs Maughan Thiem Kia Oval September 4
Two lesser lights had their best games this year for the Eagles. 1. Rory Lehmann was very good down back 2. Jake Comitogiani
Had we been playing North, Glenelg or Norwood (instead of Centrals) and they put up those performances, it would be very difficult to drop them. But if fit, Thompson and D. Menzel probably replaces them. However, if we do get through to the GF and we need an extra tall in the backline to combat McBean, Rory Lehman has put his name right up there.
And now that Max Litsner had an excellent first game, we have 4 HB flankers to fit into 2 positions and that's not considering Dane MacFarlane. Tough selection problems. Would we go with 3 youngsters in the backline? Last year, Mansell (BP) Wehr (HB) Jones (HB). Could Beecken (BP) Jungfer (HB) Litsner (HB) with a total of about 20 games between them repeat last year's result? Certainly have the pace, offensive and defensive skills even if the kicking skills of Jungfer and Litsner are a little below last year's trio. Then, of course, there is Rowland, Toumpas, Goldsworthy to consider (assuming Guiffreda plays BP or CHB)
Norwood getting Mathew Nunn back this week will be a far better team than the ones we have beaten

The coaching staff will have a hard job this week selecting the team. I feel we play better when only one of the Menzel boys play. I like the hardness of Firns, Comma and Poole up forward. Now that Lehmann is much fitter and has his confidence up he looks like he could be an answer in the back line.

Re: Eagles V Bulldogs Maughan Thiem Kia Oval September 4
I think that when Hayes is rucking and von Bertouch
and Firms are up forward, our aerial power looks thin and we have to rely on the smalls. When the smalls are controlled, von Bertouch and Firms are not likely to win the game. Suggest one but not two of them and put Cameron up there.

With Lehmann looking capable down back, the Cameron up forward idea definitely rates a look at. Could be a good pinch hitter during the finals.

Gee, we would have been unlucky if we got any injuries in a training run like that gamegoddy11 wrote:How did we fair over the weekend in regard injuries.

Good that we have got Goldsworthy, Cameron and McFarlane back after long injury time. Unfortunate that those players could not have got 3 games at least to recover full match fitness. Cameron might be underdone. And McFarlane might not be in our best 22 at present.

Dane was looking like he was on target for about 50 disposals on Saturday in the 2's until he copped a fairly heavy hit that seemed to slow him up for the rest of the day.

With you on playing both the brothers. They both offer something but not together. We lack a bit of forward defensive pressure with both. Dan's the man imho.wimpy wrote:The coaching staff will have a hard job this week selecting the team. I feel we play better when only one of the Menzel boys play. Will both Cameron and McFarlane be selected in the league 22 for Sunday? Could the Eagles play Goldy, Cameron and McFarlane in the same team after missing so much football (between 2 -3 months). Maybe another run in the reserves would be better and then make only a couple of changes in the league - Thompson, possibly D. Menzel as "ins".

Re: Eagles V Bulldogs Maughan Thiem Kia Oval September 4
The players that miss out will be very unlucky, but my best side has D.Menzel, Cameron and Thompson included at the expense of Comitgiani, Lehmann and Litster.
I’d trust those premiership players from last year to deliver again. More depth this year than last year.
F: D.Menzel Von Bertouch Stengle
HF: Poole Hayes Firns
C: Toumpas Sinor Pudney
HB: Jungfer Cameron Rowland
B: Giuffreda Thompson Beecken
R: Redden Knight Tsitas
I: T.Menzel Lonergan Goldsworthy Mutch

Aerie, your side looks good but for a very slow HF line - don't think Firns can be played alongside Hayes but play Firns CHF when Hayes is rucking. I would drop von Bertouch for Cameron at FF - this gives our forward line much more speed and flexibility. Vonnie just isn't finding the ball and having little impact. Lehman to play CHB.
