Thebarton Recreation Ground 1919
Here is a nice piece of West Torrens History! - I hope the club continue to play matches at Thebarton in respect of the history that the club has at the venue - night footy at Thebbie will be a nice touch!

Would like to find out some more info about the early history of Thebarton Recreation Ground, essentially when it was built - why it was built and when West Torrens first adopted it as the home ground of the club. I think that West Torrens played at the now bulldozed Jubilee Oval but am unsure of the date that the club made the move to Thebarton?

Something I have long had buried in the old memory banks .Isn't the main gate at Ashley St a memorial to the WW1 diggers .I think its on a heritage list .
Seeing I had a great Aunt who lived on the corner across the street from the oval.Used to see it a fair bit.

Re: Thebarton Recreation Ground 1919
Round 1 1922 was the first time West Torrens played at Thebarton.
Torrens 1.0 3.2 4.2 8.5 (53)
Sturt 1.2 3.7 4.11 4.12 (36)
Thebarton. 8300
Prior to that, Hindmarsh Oval was used (1905-1921). Between 1897 and 1901, Alberton Oval was used, although I've not seen anything saying it was the home ground, Torrens used it a bit along with the Jubilee Oval. Then between 1902 and 1904 Jubilee was only used, along with a couple of matches at Norwood.

Re: Thebarton Recreation Ground 1919
In actual fact, Torrens B Grade played two matches at Thebarton in 1920; defeating South 22.17 to 2.7 on the 19th of June and Port 11.33 to 2.4 on the 10th of July. It wasn't used in 1921, but from 1922 onwards.
West used Hindmarsh Oval for their B Grade between 1923 and 1925; then the Showgrounds between 1926 and 1939.

Thebarton recreation ground is in fact a soldiers memorial - after world war one - developed for the community to honour our WW1 diggers.
