Eagles vs Sturt elimination final

Ok people I know its monday pm.But we need to be fired up for this game as do the players and coaching staff.
Sturt fans are all set for a big win and on another SANFL football site .They are taking the micky (no pun intended) out of Scott Lewis .Perhaps someone should show the players what sturt think of us fans our club our ground and our Team.
We must draw a line in the sand people and not take any more backward steps.
We know they will flood.
We know they will run all day
We know they will look to Chambers /Johncock to score goals .
So we should also know how to stop them!!!!

Lets not worry too much about stopping them. Grieger and co have got that under control. One of the things Godden said early in the year was for his players to play with flair and unrestricted. Let's get that back! The players just need to back themselves in. From the small back pockets to the midfielders and forward flankers, back yourself in! Run and hunt with numbers and get that spirit back.

It has NOTHING to do with US, the supporters.

It is about the PLAYERS & the pride THEY have in their OWN performance.

We supporters/members will continue to support the club, next year & beyond.

The PLAYERS are the ones who put in the weekly grind of training, injury management & games.
It is for THEM that they improve their performance - we just go along for the ride.

I hope that THEY accept that what has been 'dished up' the past 2 weeks reflects badly on THEM, not us.

Going to disagree with you LEH.As in that stupid Nelson radio interview on his 300th that he said Eagles weren't a good team(or words to that effect).
The Team needs to see how much of a laughing stock they are in the eyes of Sturt .They need to see what they are doing and saying online .
They need to see that for that added bit of steel, like eating raw meat before the game.
They need to spare nothing or no one take no prisoners play like its their last game.

And prove Karma's a bitch!!
Doesn't matter we've beaten them 2 out of 3 in the home and away season.
This is the only time a win counts.

Actually with time to cool down and have a long power walk this morning.I guess LEH you and I are coming from different starting places .But both of us want the same thing in the END.

The players dont need family wags or supporters to know what they have to do this week! Guess we just support them as usual, and pass judgement after Sunday.

Actually what I have written is being taken the wrong way .I meant they should read what those arrogant sturt fans are writing .

Personally I think that the players use that as extra motivation(not that they should need it but humiliation could help them along) . Those pictures of Lewis would inspire me to show them .

As good a team as can be picked at this stage - disappointing the injury to Travis Lane and Biglands being underdone. Would have been good to have Biglands forward pocket with Travis Lane crumbing at his feet freeing up Welsh. Maybe next week after we upset the Blue Boys!!!

THE Eagles have done everything possible to forget last week's demoralising loss to Sturt as they plot to turn the tables on the Double Blues in Sunday's elimination final.

They haven't even looked at the video tape of the 38-point loss.

``We haven't reviewed the game at all,'' Eagles coach Michael Godden said.

``We haven't even talked about it.

``The players came in on Monday night and we focused on all the key areas we felt were important to winning at this time of year.''

One area set for significant improvement is the forwardline with Adam Grocke (glute), Scott Welsh (groin) and Trent Hentschel (back) yesterday named in a 23-man squad.

The trio missed last week's game against Sturt but will play this Sunday providing they made it through last night's training session at AAMI Stadium unscathed.

``The boys were pretty sore so we lightened the week off and they'll have a solid night tonight (Thursday), then train again on Saturday,'' Godden said.



The Eagles had trouble getting the footy past half-way and penetrating their forwardline last weekend, and Godden will welcome the return of Grocke and Welsh who have kicked 61 goals between them this season.

``He (Grocke) has been an integral part of our team all year and I really look forward to him playing,'' Godden said.

``There's a bit more experience than the guys have had there in the past.''

Godden has also promoted midfielder Jay Cheep from the reserves.

At Sturt, Crows-listed midfielder Matthew Jaensch looms as an X-factor after being named on the wing.

He is one of two inclusions along with defender Toby Thurstans who got through training on Wednesday night and should return from a hip injury.

Sturt coach Luke Norman said it was exciting to have Jaensch who was outstanding in last year's finals series back in the team.

``He (Jaensch) has played more with the Crows than he has with us this year so he leaves a bit of a hole when he's not there,'' Norman said.

``We don't want to pigeon-hole him, he probably plays his best footy off half back but he does give us an option when he goes forward.''

Norman has spoken to his players this week about the fresh challenge that comes with facing the Eagles in consecutive weeks.

``We spoke about that (last week) being a dead-rubber,'' he said.

``We wanted to win but our focus is on each game we're coming up to.

``We know they'll be a different side on Sunday and we've got to make sure we get our planning and preparation right.''

The match-ups of most interest should see Ben Grieger get the job on Sturt's key forward Brant Chambers, while Thurstans could start on Grocke providing they both play.

First-choice ruckmen, Jon Giles and Craig Parry, have been in good form and will influence the result.

STURT coach Luke Norman pleaded with Woodville-West Torrens counterpart Michael Godden at the SANFL finals launch this week.

``Can you come out and play the same way that you did on Sunday?'' Norman asked Godden with a big grin on his face.

Normally the good-natured banter between rival coaches is limited but not Norman and Godden, who went at each other in the lead up to Sunday's elimination final at AAMI Stadium.

While Norman is hoping for the Eagles to replicate their poor performance in losing to the Double Blues in round 23, his former West Adelaide team-mate, and coach, has challenged his men to respond from 12.10pm.

This is despite the Eagles appearing to limp into September, on the back of concerning losses to Sturt and North Adelaide.

``It would and it shouldn't be,'' Godden said when asked if the Eagles were tiring before the major round.



``Because we're fit, there's no excuses, we've done all the work from a skill base point of view and the way our skills were on Sunday just defies what we've been working towards.

``So it would look like we're limping towards it but the boys are pretty resilient and I think they are certainly a better side that they showed in the past two weeks.

``The last two weeks have been really tough as a coach. I've been really disappointed with the North game and the Sturt game so we have to turn that around pretty quickly.''

While Sturt is set to welcome back AFL-experienced pair Toby Thurstans (hip) and Matthew Jaensch the Eagles will include former Crows Trent Hentschel and Scott Welsh, as well as important lead-up forward Adam Grocke.

``That shores you up a bit and gives you a bit of stability,'' Godden said.

``We had some key position young kids the last couple of weeks and while the did well against Central, the last two weeks has ground them away a bit.

``So to get those senior guys back, and those guys are ready to go having had a couple of weeks off, will be exciting for us.''

Godden confirmed the Eagles will be without Power-listed pair Nick Salter and Matthew Broadbent throughout the major round after they were ruled out by Port medicos with soft-tissue injuries.

Looks like the footy budget editor has gone to the Advertiser, the margin in last years 1st Semi was not 56 points from memory, was about 19 or 20 as the boys made a late charge after being a long way behind....cue Spelly!
