Re: Eagles v Panthers 21st march
With 8 first choice players missing from the line-up for the trial against South, supporters would have been a little dubious about how the players would fare against a touted top 3 team. Mick Godden would have been pleased with the outcome.
Firstly, the defensive aspect that he's been working on showed results keeping South down to 6 goals while kicking 13.
Secondly. every player had their moments in a good team effort. South's midfielders normally kill us and despite Cross, Liddle and Co playing, midfield held up well. And we still can add Lewis and Boyd (maybe even Petrenko) to that list. South's pace also usually hurts us but it didn't seem to yesterday.
Even though South's best ruckman Bass wasn't playing, good to see the improvement of young Mullins 201 cm. Has balance, skills, intensity and got his hand to the ball at every centre bounce - with Thurlow and Bornhom playing, he may not get many games in 2015 but is a "goodun".
Rakawasi provided strength and run from the backline as did Templeton and Von Bertouch (who controlled Eddy for most of the day)
Gus Rowntree was big possession winner first half then faded a little as Appleton, Goldsworthy, Rowland emerged. Goldsworthy appeared to be playing off HB flank in the last Q and looked particularly good. Allmond's kicking in the last 2 seasons has improved incredibly and he kicked another good long goal yesterday running down from HB. Angus Poole made some clangers early but then did some very good work running through HF. Bornholm did his usual workhorse effort (they write him as 197cm but Ainger at 197cm towers above him). Would like to see Bornholm get a chance as a 3rd tall in forward line. Caleb LLoyd did some neat plays out of the back pocket. Martyn provided a lot of run. Schwarz 1st Q was excellent. McGregor's speed around the ball always worries opposition.
Now, whether we will all be as happy following next week's trial against red-hot Norwood remains to be seen.

My two cents worth
When i worked out the captains werent playing and we counted 10 league players not playing . Thought wed struggle to win !!
I was wrong
Lets start with the seconds new coach lots of either players moving up from the 18's or 18's playing . Took them awhile to get going but they did . From my vantage point they seemed to be trying to play corridor footy but also move the ball back forward !! But it did work new coaches first win
Player to watch from this match Ventura
League game yep took awhile to get going some players with league experience some seconds players !!
Yep same game style move the ball back and forward to beat the flood . Players staying back not getting sucked in to going into the Eagles forward line . It did work there were times south raced forward didnt really hurt the eagles that much . I think at one stage Eagles kicked 6 straight before that quick run got south a goal.
Foward line with just Ainger as the NAMED LEAGUE player did work . Whittlesea and Duntstan will be fighting it out for that third tall forward (staples transfer to sturt my be covered) And if Ainger doesnt work out he could also be covered by one of these . Watched as Mcgregor did things that only he could do not sure if he was off having a rest or injured !
Backline well no thompson no Guff was served well by "BOBIE" my god is he a good solid unit bit like grieger but can kick and Vonnie was great down there !! Goldie was playing across halfback and took some timely marks . I am concerned we might be a small defender short not 100 percent that Loyd is the answer a bit one dimensional and turned the ball over with some errant kicks .
Rucks were good they tried to intimidate Mullins glad to say it didnt work !!
Not getting excited how many South players were out no idea and they were playing Nathan Daniel at fullback in the last term so take the win with a grain of salt .
Heard most of the league players back next week . And is it the Seconds round 1 next week ?

Re: Eagles v Panthers 21st march
Round 1a (catch up round) for the twos this week then round 1 the following week, 3 games in both rounds.
There is another catch up round (7b) when the state game is on, it has 2 games.
Round 14 also only has 2 games.
Round 17 is a split round with 5 games over 2 weeks, west and north play both weekends.
Interesting fixture, but sorts itself out in the end.
Couple of promising results yesterday considering about 80% of the twos players were eligible for under 18's.

Guiffreda plays short or tall. Guiffreda will likely take the resting rovers as he usually does while Templeton in the other back pocket takes opposition's third tall. No worries there.
2015 team looks like being a taller team without losing pace compared with 2014 version.

Re: Eagles v Panthers 21st march
Did Petrenko play in Essendon's main trial? He was named to play but someone said they didn't see him at all in the match. If he played in the B grade trial, chances of Eagles getting him back have improved even if the A grade Essendon Players are suspended over the drug issue. You would think if Petrenko's form has not be good in 2 trials over there, then Essendon would rather contract players promoted from their Rookie list rather than sign a 25 yr old who has not shown form. So where and how did he go last trial? (please don't tell me he had 25 kicks and kicked 4 goals!).
