LEAGUE MATCH REPORT RD 1

Welcome back to another exciting year of football. After what was a gut wrenching loss last year the players have put together an elite pre-season. It’s always a challenge to mentally fight back but the players have been exceptional and have really come with a sense of anger and passion and are very fired up to make sure we give ourselves a chance to compete at the end of this year.

If you want a challenge, well going to play Centrals at home is the one you want to start with. The game started well for us being able to convert our opportunities to put some scoreboard pressure on getting to quarter time with a 17 point lead.

The second quarter was a bit closer, we had plenty of chances but didn’t hit the scoreboard and luckily for us Centrals were inaccurate, finally losing that term by 3 points but still with a 14 point lead at the main break.

The conditions were tough so both sides enjoyed a good break to recharge the batteries for a tough second half. The third was a real arm wrestle, statistically nearly the same along with both teams scoring 15 points. It was disappointing to give up 2 goals late in the last couple of minutes as this swung the momentum towards Centrals.

Centrals then kicked the first goal at the 2 minute mark and the margin was back to 7 points and it was game on. This is the part I am very proud of. With some less experienced players and the game on the line the whole group stood up and made the last quarter ours. This is a great sign of strength and fitness and a testament to their hard work. The team finished strongly kicking 6-5 to 0-1 in the last 20 minutes of the match with the final margin being 47 points.

The first 5 rounds are always tough to predict and if Centrals had kicked better in the second the pressure may have been different. We have to be proud and happy to start with a strong win but we need to make sure we get better as Saturday wasn’t perfect and we have plenty to work on. In saying that we did do a lot right and after one game I can see we have plenty to work with.

Anyway that’s round 1 and now we head home to Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval to take on West on Easter Saturday. Every game is a privilege and we couldn’t be more excited to get home and play in front of you. We want to continue to improve to make sure we give you all plenty to cheer about.

RESERVES MATCH REPORT RD 1

The Reserves on Saturday had a new look with 9 debutants, but the way they went about the challenge hasn’t changed from last year. The game started slowly with both sides applying good pressure and creating opportunities off the back of that. As most first rounds go, once the dust settles it’s important to get into your game plan and stay consistent with that. The players executed this really well.

Up until time on in the second it looked like Centrals were going to be too strong, but when that time came the players found their groove. At this stage it was 3-3 to 3-9 and 11 to 23 inside 50’s so Centrals were really in control. After this the players executed very well and kept the mistakes to a minimum as the remainder of the game was 11-8 to 3-0 and 32 to 10 inside 50’s. Finally running out winners by 50 points.

With so many of our Under 18’s from last year making their debut it was very exciting to see the way they dealt with the increase in pressure whilst still being able to steady and execute. This experience will certainly help grow them as footballers, the challenge now is always to back up. This is the hardest thing to do for less experienced players, so that will be the focus this week. First you must make sure the body gets recovered then you need to hit the computer room to learn. Finally you must put in a good week on the track, then turn up in a good state so both as an individual and as a team we can improve every time we get a chance to play.

The Under 18s opened their season with a win against Central Districts on Saturday at Maughan Thiem Oval, winning by 22 points.

The players showed some really good signs with their ball movement and attack on the ball and we had built up a good lead at three quarter time. Centrals attacked very hard in the final term and outscored us but we were able to steady and win the game.

David Willmott did well in ruck and working hard around the ground, Cooper Gaffney won plenty of the ball, Marty Frederick and Kai Pudney gave us good drive from their wings, Jarrod Miller and Isaac Brill were both strong defenders, and Mitch Mead’s 3 first term goals and on ball efforts were handy.

We showed some good signs as well as a few areas to work on so we are really looking forward to this week where we take on West Adelaide on Thursday night at City Mazda Stadium.

UNDER 16’S MATCH REPORT RD 3

After two good wins, the lads were keen to take on the Challenge of Centrals this week, who were also undefeated.

With a very good start, we were able to kick 8 goals in the first quarter aided by a slight breeze, while holding Centrals to no score. The game was being played on our terms. By half time our lead was extended to 78 points.

To Centrals credit they came out after half time & won the third quarter 3 goals to 1. We were able to finish the game off by kicking 6 goals to 1, to win by 98 points.

A much more even Team performance this week from the lads resulting in 9 goal kickers, with Luke Beecken kicking 6, Jake Puzzuoli 4 plus Kysaiah Pickett, Cooper Hayes & Steven Osborne each kicked 2.

As mentioned the pleasing part was a better team performance across the day with the focus on doing things better when we didn’t have the footy in our hands resulting in good pressure to turn the ball over in which our forwards were able to reap some reward.

This week we take on West Adelaide at Richmond under lights on Thursday before Easter.

LEAGUE MATCH REPORT RD 2

After a strong Round 1 performance the focus was on consolidating the win and making sure we continue to improve. The players had a really good week on the track in what was a pretty tough week in our training cycle in preparation for our first home game of the year.

The game didn’t start as fluent as we would have liked. Both sides were guilty of simple mistakes while on the inside at stoppages it was tough and hard. We had plenty of the ball but at times we over used it and weren’t as direct as planned with West having the best of the first quarter and going to the break with a 1 point lead.

The second quarter is where everything started to fall into place with a dominant performance having plus 14 entries and winning the quarter by 49 points. The players were strong on the inside while having some real class on the outside, running in waves and playing some very attractive football to give us a 48 point lead at the main break.

The third quarter started poorly for us with West having 5 shots on goal in the first 7 minutes. The players weathered that storm and started to play some nice football kicking 4-3 to 1-0 for the remainder of that quarter. The start was very disappointing but to get back the momentum and go on with that was a good sign.

When you have a 10 goal lead going into the last quarter you can make life hard or easy for yourself and we made it hard. To Wests credit they kept coming but there is no doubt there was a drop off in our intensity, which is something that will be reviewed and discussed. The final margin of 60 points was a strong one and we must not forget there was some very good football played.

Our focus now shifts to Anzac Day against Sturt. It’s an absolute privilege to play on this day and one things for sure we will prepare to make sure we are ready for the fight. The club has started this season strongly with all grades showing very good signs. We now just need to keep working hard and make sure every game is valued and our intensity and thirst for the contest gets stronger and stronger as the year goes on.

RESERVES MATCH REPORT RD 2

Happy Easter to you all, I trust you enjoyed the break.

Round 2 saw the challenge of the new look reserves backing up from round one’s success.

With a solid week on the track & only 1 change to the line-up that played against Centrals the side was reasonably settled & set to go.

The opening quarter was played at a quick pace & both sides kicked accurately in front of goal with the Eagles leading at quarter time by six points, 4.0 to 3.0.

Early signs of the game pattern already emerging by quarter time with over use of the ball.

By half time the trend continued with the Eagles +37 on possessions & +11 on inside 50 entries but trailing on the score board by 12 points 4.1 to 6.1.

The third quarter was an even contest with each side kicking 2 goals and West extending their lead by 2 points by the 3rd quarter break 6.3 to 8.5.

Final quarter saw West kick away with the match scoring 3.1 goals to 1.2 to eventually run out winners 7.5 to 11.6.

At the end of the game we finished with 30 plus more possessions & 20 plus more inside 50`s than the opposition.

The clear difference between the two matches played so far has been our ball use & decision making in particular when going forward. Our kick to hand ball ratio was not consistent with the game plan & our set up & ball movement was also not consistent with the overall game plan, areas to work on this week on the track.

The new players to senior football did not respond to well to the games frontal pressure & on the rebound found themselves chasing rather than being chased throughout the whole day, which makes for a long day.

The challenge for the group this week will be how they prepare for the ANZAC Day game.

After the Easter weekend, preparation is key as routines will change with the 10 day break between rounds.

UNDER 18’S MATCH REPORT RD 2

The Under 18s had a fighting win against West Adelaide on Thursday night. Trailing at three quarter time by 11 points we kicked 5 goals 5 points in the last quarter to West Adelaide’s 2 straight goals to get the points. It was a very hard match with players from both teams committing themselves to the ball and tackling well. Cooper Gaffney had 36 possessions and 8 tackles and was clearly our best player on the night. Others to play well included James Rowe who won a lot of contested possessions, Jake Weidemann who ran hard all night, Xavier Redden was strong and composed in our midfield and defence, Kai Pudney ran and worked very hard and Tyson Francis kicked 4 goals. Jack Lukosious certainly came alive in the last quarter when he went into ruck and gave us a real spark.

This week we play North Adelaide at Prospect Oval and we are looking forward to a great contest.

UNDER 16’S MATCH REPORT RD 4

After three wins to open up the U16 Season, Six more changes were made this week to give opportunity to lads to perform at this level.

On Thursday evening and under lights of the Easter long weekend, the game began frantically, our efficiency providing us with a 9 point lead at quarter time, albeit with one less scoring shot. By half time we had increased our lead to 4 goals with some good presentation from Brodie Arriola who took 6 marks up to half time.

Our third quarter was our most productive in kicking 5 goals to West Adelaide’s 3 points.

Full credit to West Adelaide who really put the competition up to us and lead in most departments including hard ball gets, yet we were much more efficient when going forward.

Our better players included Lachlan Hoile, Brodie Arriola who kicked 6 goals, small midfielder Kysaiah Pickett, Ruckman Steven Osborne, Jackson Mead and small defender Dylan Errington.

This week we look forward to taking on North Adelaide at Prospect on Saturday.

I would like to start by saying what a privilege it was to have the opportunity to play a game of Aussie Rules Football on such a special day in our countries calendar. To be able to play in front of 4000 people at a suburban ground, with 2 committed football sides in drizzling rain is exactly why our footy is so great and why we are so lucky to have such a strong competition with passionate and dedicated footballers and supporters.

This game was never going to be pretty in those conditions but it was set to be tough and it lived up to that. Early on the game was relatively open but neither side had the ascendancy, it was just a matter of who made less mistakes. We finally went into quarter time with a slight 2 point lead.

Some drizzle came and the ball started to get slippery so this quarter wasn’t free flowing, it was simply tough and hard with us going to the long break 6 points up.

The third quarter with the wind at their back Sturt had the best of the play. They didn’t capitalize on their forward movements but there does need to be credit given to our back 6 who made it difficult for them to score. This left only a 1 point margin at the last break which set up an exciting final term.

The final quarter was going to be a quarter you know was to deliver big moments. It lived up to those expectations with individual bits of brilliance followed by desperate acts of courage. Finally running out winners by 14 points.

We didn’t play at our best and Sturt were inaccurate but as mentioned the defence did very well to make the shots from difficult positions, plus we were able to rush many through. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you get the win you just have to get it. The players prepared very well and as always put in a huge amount of work to make sure match day they were at the top of their game. In what has been a strong start to our season we still haven’t hit the holy grail and that means moving on and getting ready for Adelaide. You never really know what your going to get against the Afl sides so all we can do is recover well and prepare for what will be another great game of footy.

G`day Diggers & Cobbers

As summed up after round 2 the challenge for the young group was going to be attitude & how they approach their preparation for the ANZAC Day clash given the disruption to their regular match preparation routine as well as following an in depth game review during the week of the past performance & were proud to report the boys responded well with a 17 point win.

Right from the first bounce, the tone & game style typical of the Eagles football club was played, with quick ball movement, efficient ball use with 48 kicks to 22 handballs, efficient scoring from inside 50 entries & pressure, pressure, pressure in & around the ball & when the opposition had the ball, with the scoreboard 2.2 to 1.6 at quarter time

Half time saw the lead increase by 7 points 5.6 to 3.7 & although we were trailing on the hitouts (16-18) & noticeable improvement in our structure & set ups at the stoppages around the ground, provided our on ballers first use of the ball ( +clearances 17-12) & when not in possession placing the opposition mid`s, backs & forwards under pressure.

This approach & discipline continued in the second half & the boys edged out to a 16 point lead by three quarter time 9.7 to 6.9.

With the opposition trailing at the final break & on their home deck their went all out attack, playing a high risk style of game play with players getting loose across ½ back & centre, resulting in 20 inside 50`s for the quarter.

The boys were not phased during this period of the game & remained mentally tough & tight during the challenge entering inside the forward 50 11 times for the quarter out-scoring the opposition 1.4 to 1.3 to run out winners 10.11 to 7.12

In comparison to round 2 were we finished with +20 more inside 50`s than the opposition & lost, this week we finished the game -10 inside 50`s than the opposition 38 to 48 & won.

Our ball use & overall pressure was far superior than on the last outing & this was mainly driven by the player`s attitude to improve & play the Eagles way.

The challenge for the lads is again backing up for round (4) in particular given there`s a bye this weekend & the next match day 13th May the reserves don’t play (Crows round)

Emphasis on recovery, conditioning & being mentally switched on are priorities while preparing as well as getting the balance right when away from the club

The Under 18s had a good win against North Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Saturday. It was a tough, tight contest all day with very little separating the sides on the scoreboard at any time. We had a 1point lead at three quarter time and at the end of the game we were in front by 9 points.

Tyson Francis held down centre half forward and took many marks as he worked hard leading and presenting all day. James Rowe had another good game in the midfield and he was well supported by Isaac Moller, Nick Moore, Jake Weidemann and Cooper Gaffney. Kai Pudney continued his good form on the wing and Marty Frederick gave us some good drive from defence.

We take on the Double Blues this week at Peter Motley Oval and they are in good form so it should be a great game.

Our game against North Adelaide this week provided us with some different challenges, with North not registering a win thus far and ourselves winning the first four games it was about the mental challenge and our ability to stay focus on what we were trying to achieve as far as our performance was concerned.

To North Adelaide’s credit they came out of the blocks hard and fast and not for some inaccurate kicking they would have had the game well and truly under control at half time, North had 9 more scoring shots than us but only lead by 16 points at Half Time.

After half time we showed some character and were much better in particular our third quarter in which we kicked 5 goals to North’s 2 and at three quarter time we lead by 10 points. The last quarter was a bit of a shoot out with 9 goals being scored, North kicked 5 and we managed 4 goals to hold on to win by 1 goal.

Jackson McCann, Lachie McNeill & Steve Osborne were consistent all day whilst Trent Burgoyne & Shaun McNeilly had their moments. With 9 different goal kickers, Jamie Coff kicked 3, Jake Puzzuoli 2 and Brodie Arriola 2.

This week we look forward to taking on Sturt at Peter Motley Oval who are vying for a top four position also.

After a strong start to the 2017 season this game was a real test against a very dangerous side. On a day we celebrated Matthew Goldsworthy’s fantastic achievement of 150 quality games for the Eagles it was important we produced a good game so Matt would always remember this day.

The game started well kicking 3 goals in the first 8 minutes. The players had a real thirst for the contest and this was giving us first look at the ball. The defence held up well winning the majority of 1 on 1’s and the forwards were making the most of their opportunities which allowed us to have a 5 goal lead at the first break.

The second quarter was much tighter and unfortunately we were in-accurate kicking 2-5. The tackle count was 21-3 for the term which highlights the hunger the players had for the contest getting to half time with a 34 point lead.

The third quarter was disappointing as we started to over use the handball and wasn’t as direct as we would have liked but to Glenelg’s credit they smashed us in contested ball by 8. The positive was we still were able to win the quarter by 11 points.

The last quarter focus was to get back winning the contested ball and be more direct. This eventuated winning the contest by 6 and winning the term by 25 points, finally running out victors by 70 points.

To have 9 goal scorers again is pleasing as the load is being shared. The players were very good on the inside fighting for that 50/50 ball but we also showed some really nice, clean, fast movement to score 119 points.

With that game out of the way we now move onto two massive games, first at Alberton then a 6 day break into Norwood at Norwood the following Friday night. These challenges are brilliant and I know the players are really up for it. Port gave us a real touch up down there last year and they are playing some really good football. I know both clubs will be keen for the contest and all we need now is a big crowd to give the game the justice it deserves.

Hi All,

Happy Mother`s Day to all the Eagles Mum`s trust you had a great day & were well looked after.

It had been (19) days between games for the Reserves & the boys were keen to finally get back to a contest rather than track work, having said that their track work in the week`s leading up to Rd 4 was excellent and the final result reflected this with a (41) point win.

The first quarter typified a (19) day break with the boys slightly off with their skills & positioning around the ground with the opposition catching us out with cleaner ball movement & numbers at the contest, were we allowed them to slightly control the quarter setting up a (13) point lead by quarter time 2.1 to 4.2

The second quarter saw the boys start to get their hands on the footy first & cleaner possession in the middle & from there the team started to outwork the opposition, intercept & turn over the oppositions switch of play, generating more inside 50 entries & out-scoring the opposition (3) goals to (1) going into half time with a (3) point lead 5.5 to 5.2

As with the first half the third quarter was an even contest, both sides kicking (3) goals for the quarter & the Eagles edging the lead out to (5) points at three quarter time 8.8 to 8.3. What the score board was not showing was the growing confidence & control that the boys were starting to have around the ground, with a +7 in Hit-outs & +12 for inside 50 entries by (3) quarter time.

The last quarter saw the confidence & control start to take effect on the opposition. Opposition players were continually beaten in or at the contest turning the ball over, providing opportunity for the Eagles quicks to get space & use the ball well going forward. Out-scoring the opposition (6.2) to (2) points in the final quarter running out comfortable winners 14.10 to 8.5 at the final siren

As the lads experienced during the past (3) week`s the role of the Reserves is to not only develop them as League players but to set a match day standard for the League side to tune into & prepare for their game.

It was very pleasing to see the boys get engaged over this period, prepare well & work quarter by quarter to out-work & eventually over run the opposition.

Areas of improvement include our ball use as the Kick to Handball Ratio of 1:1 for the game is above our ideal target range, with the positives coming from our tackle count & scores from inside 50`s meeting target range.

This week`s game against quality opposition, away from home poses the same challenges, in particular out working the opposition for the whole day.

After finishing 3rd and earning our way into a Preliminary Final we were keen to put our best foot forward and take on Sturt at Football Park.

Being a night game and with conditions being a little slippery, contested footy and being clean under pressure was going to play an important part in the game.

We began well with our hunt and want to get our hands on the footy first being first class, as was our pressure to cause turn overs when the opposition had the ball and our ability to get the ball to dangerous spots when going inside 50. In a tight contest at the half time break we held a 14 point lead.

We continued our good work in the second half, with the game going goal for goal for were able to maintain ascendancy to win by 15 points.

With 8 different goal kickers for our 10 goals indicates that it was a team effort and everyone did their bit when it was their turn to contribute.

Luke Beecken and Dale Pearce kicked 2 goals each, Lachlan Hoile, Jackson McCann, Ben Jungfer, Harry Schoenberg and Trent Burgoyne worked tirelessly thru the midfield with Deacon Braun being composed under pressure when we need it.

We look forward to playing Glenelg in the Grand Final on Saturday, 2.10pm at Football Park.

Any time you play at Alberton it’s not only a great experience it’s always a great challenge. The players have consistently prepared themselves well for every match this season and Saturday was no exception.

It was evident early in this game that things weren’t going to be free flowing, it was simply going to be an in tight tough game of footy against quality opposition, which at this stage of the year is exactly what you want.

The first term was typically tight as you would have expected, but there was enough open play for both sides to create chances to score. After an intense quarter we slightly had the upper hand going to the first break with a 10 point lead.

The second was no different to the first, tough and hard and scores were at a premium with us eventually winning the quarter by 2 points to give us a 12 point lead at the long break.

The third became a bit like circle work as both teams were fighting hard to break the game open and some errors started to creep in. The players really competed well having +36 possessions, +11 contested and 13-8 inside 50’s, we just couldn’t finish our work only scoring 2-2 from the 13 entries, the positive was defensively we were doing very well and this gave us a 19 point buffer and the final break.

Once again the last was an arm wrestle, but after a couple of hours of two very good teams going at it we finally ran out 21 point victors.

For those that were at the game I think you would agree there isn’t much between the two teams at the moment so it was very nice to get over the line in a tight one. The players have been working extremely hard on making sure we turn up every week prepared and ready for anything while making sure we continue to improve. This Friday nights challenge is another beauty. Norwood at home is a tough task especially under lights but there is one thing for sure our players will be ready and are excited about another challenge.

Port Adelaide at Alberton is always a game you look forward to as a player & the Reserves looked forward to this week`s challenge.

Right from the outset the match was played at a level above Reserves & you could not fault the endeavour to match the opposition in winning the contested ball with an equal hit-out count & (-2) possession count at quarter time however the opposition made the most of a (+6) inside 50 entries scoring 2.7 to 0.0 for the quarter.

By half time it felt like we were right in the game & if we were able to get more reward for our inside 50 entries (+2 for the quarter) the scoreboard may have been a closer at the break. As with the first quarter you couldn’t fault our effort at the contested ball or around the stoppages however finding a clear target up front was challenging & the opposition stretched their lead to (26) points 1.2 to 4.10

The third quarter saw the opposition start to get on top of the game extending the margin to (70) points 1.2 to 11.12 even so the boys remained strong in their efforts to achieve the objectives set out for the game matching the opposition at contested ball & sticking with our set ups & game plays.

The boys stuck to the task in final quarter refusing to let up & let the game blow out again matching the opposition in contested ball & pressure acts scoring 2.1 to 4.3 for the quarter.

While there is nothing pleasing about a (84) point loss, from the Coaching Teams perspective we were encourage by the way the younger Eagles players went about their business for the day, sticking to the game objectives to win the contested ball, maintain the zone & press & take the opposition & game on when the opportunity presents & for this the boys executed well.

Round5`s game was a good learning experience for the boys as the pace & skill level was up on a standard Reserves game & we got to see how far players have come & likely to go to in the future.

This week`s game against Norwood at the Parade in another game as a player you look forward to & given the short preparation time between games provides the added challenge of getting yourself right to go

The under 18s had a good win against West Adelaide on Saturday, winning by 44 points. After an even first half where we led by just the 9 points at half time, our third quarter was very good and we kicked 5 goals 5 points to West Adelaide’s 1 point to put the game very much our way and finished 44 points in front at full time. It was great to give 7 players their first Under 18 game for the year (Todd Hoyle, Jordan McKinnon, Bailey Hann, Tyson Friend, Michael Bondarenko, Grady Armfield and Caleb Smith) and they joined Nathan Studham and Thomas Carter who were playing just their second games as well. All the boys acquitted themselves well. As for best players, Mitch Mead did very well in our midfield with 33 possessions, working all parts of the ground and using his speed and hard running to good effect, Tom Schmusch did very well on both the wing and at centre half hack, taking 10 marks and winning a lot of the ball and using it very well, Liam Martin was very good on the wing giving lots of run and carry, Jake Cook in our midfield played very well making strong tackles and winning 22 possessions, Nick Moore continued his good form both in the midfield and up forward and Jack Lukosious had another good game as our key forward kicking 4 goals and also taking 10 marks.

This week we face Norwood at home for another big challenge.

After a typical competitive finals pressure game against Sturt in the Preliminary Final we were looking forward to taking on the undefeated Glenelg in the Grand Final.

In what was an arm wrestle for both teams, the pressure from all players on the ground indicated that we had a game on our hands. In a low scoring first quarter Glenelg held a 7 point advantage.

The second quarter brought more of that Finals pressure and both teams due to that pressure were inaccurate in front of goal. Glenelg kicked 5 points whilst we managed 2 goals 7 and it was us who held a 7 point lead going into the main break.

After half time both sides again were relentless with their pressure and the arm wrestle continued with ourselves holding a 1point lead going into the last quarter. With several lead changes during the final term Glenelg were able to hold on to narrowly win by 5 points.

Whilst it is disappointing to lose a Grand Final, credit to the lads throughout the whole program and in particular their endeavours throughout the Finals series. Harry Schoenberg was very good with 36 disposals and 1 goal as was Ben Jungfer on top of his 23 disposals layed 12 tackles, Jackson McCann, Kysaiah Pickett, Brodie Arriola with 3 goals were significant as was Deacon Braun in defence.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Coaching and Support staff for their fantastic efforts and professional approach during the Under 16 Program in providing an environment that is conducive to learning and creating standards that will hold the players in good stead for the future.

After a few really strong weeks Friday night was disappointing. The game highlighted some deficiencies in our style and for that I am grateful because this is the time of year you need to know that information, so in some ways Friday did us a few favours. This is by no means saying I wanted Friday to happen it’s just the fact that it did and it now creates an opportunity to learn and make our side even stronger into the future.

Even though we won the first term the writing was on the wall. Our contested ball was way down and we were getting beaten convincingly at restarts. Our desire to run and link was off which made us play slow and reactive.

The second quarter didn’t see any improvement, we threw things around to try to get a spark, but it did little to change the momentum of the game.

After the long break it looked like we had turned the corner, playing some better football and getting back within 9 points but unfortunately that’s where it ended. Our inability to win the ball was poor, and when we did have the ball our ability to adjust the speed of the game just wasn’t there.

The last quarter was a flat one with not much happening, and with little bench we went into damage control finally losing the game by 31 points.

As I said earlier we learnt a lot about ourselves on Friday night and all of these things are in our control. It’s not that we didn’t know what to do its just we struggled to execute. This is in no way causing stress, it’s all part of the process of a long and demanding year. With some unfortunate injuries to key personnel the next few weeks will be an exciting challenge to make sure whoever plays in any position, at any given time, is not about the name it’s about the position and team standards that we didn’t uphold on Friday night.

Following last week`s disappointing result the Reserves bounced back for an excellent result against Norwood at the Parade Friday night recording a (43) point win.

Statistically the first quarter was an even contest in all areas & you could sense immediately that the lads had come to play putting the opposition under genuine pressure with & without the ball in hand. The opposition made slightly better use of the ball inside 50 kicking 4.1 to 3.1 to lead by 6 points at quarter time.

The second quarter was played at the same intensity & the momentum had started to swing the Eagles way with +31 more possessions & +5 inside 50`s for the quarter & by half time the boys had reversed the quarter time deficit to be up by 7 points, 6.2 to 5.1.

The third quarter saw the Eagles start to get on top in positions around the ground, the total possession count had increased to +68, +12 for Hit outs & +10 inside 50 entries to increase the lead to (38) points 11.5 to 5.3 by three quarter time.

With the damage done by three quarter time & the sting gone out of the game the final quarter saw the game become an open game style from both sides & both sides scored freely at times with the Eagles outscoring the opposition & at the final siren running out winners 15.9 to 8.8

With (4) changes from the previous round side (all from the U18`s) & (2) debutant’s, the Coaching Panel couldn’t be any more pleased by the way the team came together, outworked & eventually over ran the opposition to record the 4th win for the season.

The challenge for the side this week will be to back up this performance with another strong hit out against quality opposition North Adelaide at home. They have seen that if they prepare well & come with their best attitude to play that they are capable of matching any team on the day.

The Under 18s had a good win against Norwood on Saturday winning by 62 points. The win was set up by a very good first quarter where, after kicking with the aid of a strong breeze, we kicked 8 goals 2 points and held Norwood scoreless. In the second quarter when Norwood had the breeze we were able to hold them to 2 goals and kick 2 ourselves to go in at half time in a very comfortable position which we then maintained for the game. Pleasingly we again had the opportunity to give 2 players, Rhyan Fitzpatrick and Ari Rigney their first under 18 games for the club as well as bring 2 players up from the under 16s in Kysiah Pickett and Jackson Mead. All of them made a contribution to the win. Our best players included Todd Hoyle in just his second under 18 game, who did very well in our midfield and he was ably supported by Jake Cook, Nick Moore and Joe Simpson, Isaac Brill led a strong defence and Kysiah Pickett showed his class with four goals moving between the wing and half forward.

This week we kick off the triple header at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval with an early 9.25am start against North Adelaide, a challenge which we are very much looking forward to.

After a poor performance last week it was nice to get the points Saturday. The way we did it wasn’t the way we want to play and has left us with plenty to work on.

The game started with us being very unconvincing, losing the contested ball by a massive 11 and giving away 11 free kicks including 5 x 25 metre penalties which cost us 3.1. We want to be strong at the contest but that was undisciplined and we are lucky in the end it didn’t hurt us. North outplayed us and went to the break with a handy 26 point lead.

When faced with these situations you have to gain control of the game and patiently work your way back into it. The players did this well and got the game back on even terms and we went to half time 12 points behind.

The third quarter was by far our best. We started to win the ball around the scrimmages which was giving our forward line first look at it which in turn allowed our backs to set up better. There was some really nice movement and we ended up winning the quarter by 29 points which overall gave us a 17 point lead.

The start of the last was solid, continuing on from the third as we pushed the lead out to 23 points. This is when we lost our way again. North to their credit came back hard kicking 5 goals to our 1 in the next 15 minutes, ultimately getting the lead back in time on. To the players credit they did not panic and played out a controlled red time period, with Wundkes and Haylock finishing the good work to finally run out winners by 11 points.

Days like this give you plenty to reflect on. Our good was excellent but our bad was undisciplined and erratic. Throughout a season you will go through a range of positives and negatives, the important thing is you continue to learn. When you are faced with these situations you need to compose yourself, focus back on the job and take control. Games won in this way are critical in the development of any team, also from a win/loss perspective they help a lot later in the year.

We now move onto South. South have had a couple of tough weeks against very good opponents and I am sure are keen to get back in the winner’s circle. For us we go to the bye after this so it’s critical we finish the first half of the season well with a fully committed, disciplined team effort at home.

As a player playing Reserves footy has its own challenges, none more so than consistency.

As Coaches we understand that player development, executing team structures & plays & pride in our performance go hand in hand with producing consistent players & while on the weekend the result may not have been what we strive to achieve, what we were able to achieve on the weekend was consistency in the areas just mentioned therefore making head way on developing consistent future league players.

The first quarter saw an even contest between the two sides & while the opposition were +60 in possessions the boys were +7 in Tackles, +7 in Hitouts & +6 in Clearances and with -1 Inside 50 entries were more efficient to be trailing 2.3 to 3.1 at quarter time.

Second quarter saw the opposition make the most of a +7 Inside 50 entries at get out to a (39) point lead by half time 3.3 to 9.6 but again in the areas of pressure (Tackles) & getting first use of the ball (Hitouts & Clearances) the boys were out preforming the opposition & ahead on.

Third quarter saw the pressure & winning first ball start to generate some good ball movement & hit the scoreboard outscoring the opposition (3) goals to (2) to trail by (35) at three quarter time 6.5 to 11.10

The boys did not let up in the applying pressure or winning first use of the ball in final quarter & finished the game +12 for Tackles, +17 in Hitouts & +8 for Clearances but the total of inside 50 entries for the opposition enabled them to kick a winning score 8.5 to 15.14

While the result may not have been the same as last week, you couldn’t fault the endeavour shown for the whole game or the fact that the game was played with the same consistency in set ups & pressure acts as the week before giving an insight that there may be genuine future league players to come from the Eagles underage system.

The Under 18s lost our first game for the season on Saturday, going down to North by 21 points. It was a tough contested game with scoring for both sides proving difficult. Down three goals at three quarter time we attacked relentlessly in the last quarter but North ultimately proved too strong running out winners 8 goals 7 points to 4 goals 10 points. Only kicking one goal in each quarter was a big issue for us.

Continuing the trend of recent weeks we welcomed Rhys Iliou into the team for his first Under 18 game and he did some nice things for us on his wing. Isaac Brill led our defence very well and Jake Weidemann was a presence on the ball and in our defence and up forward. Bailey Hann did some hard work in the midfield, Caleb Smith defended well and Todd Hoyle and Harrison Hawkins tried very hard in our midfield.

This week we face the undefeated Panthers at Hickinbotham Oval on Sunday so this week we will be getting ourselves organised for a big performance to meet that challenge.

One of the great things I love about football is the unscripted highs and lows it can produce, sometimes over years but like Saturday simply over minutes. South came with a plan which clearly worked, but to the players credit they never stopped trying different things and in the end they showed great maturity to get the points.

With only 1 goal scored in the first quarter doesn’t give me much to report on other than the game was played with multiple restarts and not a lot of open field play.

In the second quarter we started to see the score board tick over with South having the majority of the play to go into half time with an 18 point lead.

After the long break the players looked to be slowly getting back on top. With some better movement and some strong inside work I felt the game was turning, even though this was a slow turn it gave us a sniff being only 13 points behind.

The final quarter was played predominately in our half having 11 to 4 inside 50’s. As most would know it came down to the last 60 seconds where Angus Poole kicked nicely inside 50 to connect with his team mate Ethan Haylock. Ethan did an amazing job to go back, compose himself, and kick truly to give the Eagles a 1 point lead. After this the players did a great job of running the last 60 seconds out to secure an unlikely win.

As mentioned the game didn’t hit many heights but I am very proud of the resilience of this group to get it done when it counted. We now move into the mid-season bye with a good start to the season in the bank. We obviously have had some major injury issues lately and over the last few weeks we haven’t played the football we want, but there are positives. We sit in a strong ladder position and we have exposed many players to senior football, and with some more adjustments and more practice we can expect to improve a lot to make sure we can be the best we can to tackle the second half on the season.

We looked forward to Round 9 with some optimism that the boys would bounce back from a disappointing hit out the week before, after starting the game well & leading the game to half time our intensity & willingness to take the game in the second half fell away & the result mirrored last week with a 65 point loss.

At quarter time the Reserves were leading the game 3.3 to 1.3 & while there was a tendency to over use the ball by hand at times the willingness to take the game on & create resulted in more opportunities to score.

By midway through the second quarter the run & carry was starting to ease & the boys found themselves over using the ball with both foot & hand (+20 possessions) becoming stagnant at times with ball movement while maintaining the quarter margin 12 points 4.5 to 2.5 to be in front at half time.

The third quarter saw the trend of over handball continue, it wasn’t so much over handballing that was the issue but we were handballing to get out of trouble or to a flat footed player instead of creating which in the end puts everyone under unnecessary pressure at times, the opposition took advantage of better ball use kicking 7 unanswered goals in the third & leading at three quarter time 4.5 to 9.9.

The final quarter followed the third & the boys found themselves on the wrong side of the ledger when a team is up & confident as the opposition were. The opposition extended the margin by 31 points in the final with the scoreboard reading 4.8 to 14.13 at the end of the game.

The development of our players coming through the system is really positive with another debutant from the under 18s on the weekend, the new players to the Reserves need also to develop the Eagles Way of playing footy with each other, understanding what works & doesn’t work in respect to their team mates & backing the system & game style they have been brought into.

This week`s bye comes at a good time for the boys to regroup, recovery & restore some confidence with each other & come out the following week knowing by preparing well you`ll play well.

The under 18s took on the undefeated Panthers on Sunday at Hickinbotham Oval and lost the game by 28 points. After a bit of a slow start with South leading by 20 points at quarter time, a very good second quarter allowed us to get back into the game and go in at half time leading by 8 points. South played very well in the third quarter and kicked 4 goals 6 points whilst holding us scoreless. Despite kicking 3 goals in the last quarter, South were a bit too good for us and ran out comfortable winners.

Thomas Carter did well in defence, Will Schultz kicked 3 goals up forward and gained a few possessions around the ground, Kai Pudney and Nick Moore battled hard in the midfield, and Chris Schwarz and Marty Frederick were also solid in a defence under pressure for most of the day.

With the competition bye we can reset and prepare for our next challenge which will be Glenelg at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval on 24 June.

Playing Glenelg at Glenelg is always a challenge. They play the ground very well and off the back of being 5 from 5 at home there is no doubt they would have a lot of confidence and it would be critical to get off to a good start. We didn’t exactly get off to a flyer, but the signs were good in the key areas we went into the game to influence most. After a late goal we went to the quarter time break with a slim 2 point lead.

The second quarter saw Glenelg have most of the footy, having 6 scoring shots from 10 entries which is not what we like to see. On the flip side we had 14 entries which is great, but only scored 2.2 which means we were not entering our 50 with predictability to ourselves. Glenelg went to the main break 5 points up.

The first 4 minutes of the third was terrible with Glenelg having 22 to 3 possessions, 3 inside 50’s to 0 and 2 goals to 0. This is disappointing to start like that but what came after this period was pleasing. From that point to the end of the game it was +20 possessions, +16 inside 50’s and 12 scoring shots to 5. Finally giving us a strong 20 point win.

The last few weeks have thrown up numerous and varied challenges as all seasons do. What I take out of this period is we are learning a lot about ourselves and are improving in areas we have been poor in, while still continuing to grow and add layers to our game.

This week’s game against Port throws up another challenge. We played our best game for the year last time we played them and I am sure they will be keen to make a mends. This makes for a tantalising contest and one we are very excited for. With the amount of player movements we have had lately it will no doubt be a different side on paper this time, but that doesn’t mean anything will change in the way we play, so please get down to Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval to cheer on the lads in what proves to be an exciting game.

There`s probably no greater learning environment to be around or involved with than at Football Clubs & Footy Teams, there always evolving & weekly there put under test to see how much improvement has been made & how much improvement is still too go & the weekend against Glenelg we got a good look at both.

Statically the first quarter was an even contest & our overall attack on the ball & the ball carrier indicated that the boys had come to play leading at quarter time 2.5 to 2.3

The second quarter saw our dominance in hit outs (+17) & clearances (+9) start to take effect & generate scoring opportunities kicking (7) goals to set up a handy lead (25) points but a lapse in set ups & play allowed Glenelg an easy goal before half time & at the main break the scoreboard was 9.6 to 6.5

Restarts after half time are always key to wins, this week we were unable to go up another notch & we gave the opposition room to create & run outscoring (7) goals to (1) to lead a three quarter time 10.8 to 13.7

When in these situation in the final quarter you need to be composed, gain control & be confident in taking opportunities to move the ball quickly when they present & while we had managed to nullify the opposition run were unable to make the most of opportunities to move the ball quickly at times & score wise the final quarter was even at (2) goals each, with the final score 12.11 to 15.9

As mentioned earlier the beauty with footy is weekly you get to see how much improvement your making, from the Coaching Team we saw on the weekend plenty of encouraging signs that the Reserves are on the right path in developing the Eagles Way of playing footy & with a further (3) debutants from the U18`s (Lukosius, Schmusch, Cook) getting an opportunity & all playing well, we look forward to the next rounds with genuine optimism.

The Under 18s returned to the winners list on Saturday with a good win against Glenelg. We set up the match with a very strong first quarter kicking 8 goals to just 1 from the Bays and then continued that with an 8 goal to zero second quarter. The second half was good as well and we ran out 135 point winners. As expected we had many good players across the ground and Matt Longbottom led the way with his 37 disposals and 11 tackles, Dom Pratico with his 6 goals led a potent forward line, Nick Moore was strong in the midfield as well as in defence, Bailey Hann and Ben Goold, gave us a lot of drive from their wings, Sam McKay was very strong and direct in defence and Mitch Mead (3 goals) and Nathan Studham (4 goals) both did well on the ball with as well as contributing up forward.

It was great to give another two Under 16s their first games of Under 18s football and Trent Burgoyne and Deacon Braun both did well, Trent on the wing and Deacon in defence.

This week we have another great challenge against Central District at My Money House Oval Elizabeth on Friday night

Saturday’s game was a real reflection of the growth that our less experienced players have made so far this season. To see the level of performance coming from this group is fantastic as it really displays the hard work they have put in. These players need leadership and that has fallen to our more experienced group. They are less is numbers this season but their output is consistent and strong which is giving us a nice balance, so far this season.

The first quarter was a very tight contest with both sides creating chances but neither side being able to capitalise. The game wasn’t a quick one but it was tough and very competitive.

The second term was similar with Port getting the upper hand on the scoreboard. We were getting our hands on the footy with +23 possessions, +3 inside 50’s but then only scoring 1-4 to eventually have a half time deficit of 10 points.

The players were very confident at half time and knew what they had to do. When the ball was bounced in the third they really put the hammer down scoring 5 goals in the first 10 minutes to break the game open. From there the players played a nice remainder of the quarter, getting to the last break with a handy 28 point lead.

The final term was like the first half, very tight and a good contest. I did feel we had enough of the ball to draw away but in the end Port were able to win the quarter by a point which gave us a strong 27 point victory.

This was a strong performance by the group and a great reward for their commitment, but we do need to move on quickly. We take on West Adelaide this Saturday in a very important game. Westies form has hit full stride and as a group we must recover, prepare and make sure we are at 100% come game day.

On a sad note I am sure by now you would have heard about Angus Rowntree requiring another (3rd) knee reconstruction. This is a terrible blow for Angus and one that is sure to test him. One thing we know is Angus is a very tough individual and I am sure with the support of the entire Eagles Family he will get through strongly.

ROUND 11 RESERVES MATCH REPORT

As mentioned at Round 5, as a footballer you look forward to playing Port Adelaide any time during the season, there`s just something about it that naturally brings out the competitive player in us all & while the final scoreboard result may not have gone our way, at the end of the game we felt a real sense of pride & belief from the teams performance on the weekend that we are able to match any team when we come to play & play the Eagles Way.

Right from the first bounce our commitment to win the ball, take the game on & take no backward step was evident & while the opposition possessed the ball more in the first quarter (+45 in disposals) they were unable to capitalise on the scoreboard due to the good defensive & set up work & at quarter time the score was 0.1 to 2.2

The contest continued in the same way in the second & at half time in some key indicators we were breaking even or in front, Hit out`s (10) to (12), Clearances (10) to (10) & +9 in tackles (31) to (21) to be trailing at half time by (19) points 2.1 to 4.8

“Must Start Well & Maintain” after half time was discussed between the group during the break & to the credit of the players they not only did this but took the game to another level outscoring the opposition 2.5 to 1.2 to be within (10) points at three quarter time 4.6 to 5.10

The boys were up and about at three quarter time for the final quarter, with the possibility of a win. Having been up & playing at a high intensity level for (3) quarters, during the final fatigue started to kick in & some missed opportunities occurred allowing Port to get loose & score, kicking 4.5 to 0.3 to eventually take the game 4.9 to 9.15

Statistically the game was fairly even however +23 inside 50`s for the opposition generally will have an effect on the result which was the case on the weekend. You couldn’t fault the endeavour or commitment shown from all that took to the field in an Eagles jumper & although we didn’t win the game there weren’t any passengers on the day.

With (2) further debutants from the U18`s (Nick Moore & Mitch Mead) & Jake Weidemann playing his first full Reserves game along with the Leadership shown from the core senior reserves players there is a real positive outlook for the Eagles football club at Reserves level for the remainder of the season & beyond.

We look forward to next week`s game against West Adelaide at Richmond to yet again test & see how far the group has come & how far they can go.

ROUND 11 – UNDER 18’S MATCH REPORT

The under 18’s had a hard fought 4 point win against Central Districts on Friday night at My Money House Oval. It was a tight match all night although Centrals did dominate the second quarter but luckily for us they didn’t kick their goals and we were 8 points down at half time. Our third quarter was easily our best quarter for the night as we kicked the first 4 goals to get out to a 14 point lead late in the third quarter before 2 Centrals goals in the last 2 minutes of the quarter reduced the lead to 2 points at three quarter time. So it was set for a tough last quarter and both sides gave plenty with us having the early play but not converting and Centrals surging late in the quarter to draw within 4 points when the siren sounded to end the game.

It was a solid team effort and Chris Schwarz, Jarrod Miller and Sam McKay led a strong defence that was under pressure for the night with Centrals having 56 inside 50’s, Kai Pudney, Todd Hoyle and Jordan McKinnon were creative and courageous in their midfield roles, Ben Goold was very productive on his wing and Joe Simpson (4 goals) and Tyson Friend (2 goals) were very good up forward.

It was also good to give another 2 players their first games of under 18 footy and both Daniel Passaniti and Patrick Hillard did very well, with both returning to football from serious injuries sustained earlier in the year.

This week we play West Adelaide at Richmond Oval on Saturday night after the Senior game and we play for the Jake Watson Shield, an annual event where the two clubs honour the life of Jake Watson who tragically died playing for Westies in an Under 19’s match between the 2 clubs in 2002. It is an important reminder for all of us of the spirit of sport and the value we place on the opportunity to play our great game.

Congratulations to those dedicated Eagles fans who came out to support the lads in what was looking like a miserable day. Thankfully the rain stayed away for you and the boys had a solid win. As the game started it was evident it wasn’t going to be a game for the highlights reel. Both sides were off with the simple skills, even though the wind was very tricky we should have been better than that.

Kicking with a strong breeze the players had West on the back foot from the start. Controlling the middle of the ground and playing the game predominately in our forward half. Ending the term with 19-3 inside 50’s but unfortunately only kicking 2-8. Giving us an 8 point lead.

The wind was tricky going against it, but we still had 13-8 inside 50’s and once again kicking 4-6 was disappointing. This gave us a 31 point half time margin, which as you can see should have been a lot more if we executed in front of goal the way we would have liked kicking 6-14 to West 3-1.

The second half was a bit frustrating to watch but the players stuck to the task to take away a solid 45 point win.

West possessed to ball a lot throughout the day and that gave us plenty of opportunities to practice different forms of winning the ball back. The players and coaches have learnt a lot from the weekend, as we do from every game, so even though the game wasn’t that exciting we always learn something and that’s important.

Now we move onto a home game vs Sturt. They are in good form and it will be good for our group to have the opportunity to really step up. With the amount of senior players unavailable at the moment it’s a great opportunity for our newer players to test themselves against arguably the form team of the competition, which we are all very excited about.

ROUND 12 MATCH REPORT – RESERVES

After some hard work & encouraging performances from the Reserves from the past 2 games it was disappointing that the boys weren’t able to come away with a win. There were signs again that there is the talent & a game plan to match any team in the competition however as always at this level it takes a four quarter effort to have a win.

There was a stiff breeze on the weekend worth 3-4 goals favouring the southern end & in the first quarter we were kicking into it, with good ball movement & an appetite to outwork the opposition we managed to outscore West 3.1 to 3.0 to take a (1) point lead at quarter time.

There was no lapse in work effort & commitment during the second while accuracy in front of goals became an issue (1.5) and we went in three points up at half time 4.6 to 4.3.

Statistically at half time the game was fairly even although we were +46 in possessions with a handball to kick ratio of (107, 93) so possibly over using the ball by hand, other good numbers were Clearances +6 despite -13 in Hitouts.

As with last week starting well after half time was a focus & for the first 5-7 minutes we were able to do this well & control the game by keeping possession & using the width of the oval, maintaining this become an issue & West were able to string goals together to get out to a (40) point lead by three quarter time 4.6 to 10.7

The Team was thrown around a bit at the break to provide some additional targets up forward but as with any game plan you need to get your hands on the ball first & move it quickly to take advantage & during the final we weren’t quite able to do this & opposition gained control of the game by possession (117 to 74) & marks (66 to 29) for the quarter, effectively stopping any last quarter charge taking the game 4.9 to 12.10 by the final siren.

As mentioned in the opening the result was disappointing in particular given the improvement over the past week`s but in perspective with the number of changes to the sides this year there will be inconsistency at times with results, This year more times than not the players have been consistent in their approach & effort, it`s just a matter of now executing the effort consistently over four quarters.

This week`s game against Sturt at home on Sunday provides the Reserves Team the opportunity to produce a four quarter team effort, from which they can get & enjoy some reward for their effort.

The under 18s had a good close fought win on Saturday night against West Adelaide. Our first quarter with the breeze was good and we were leading by 22 points at quarter time.  Westies hit back in the second to take a 4 point lead into half time.  They also started the third quarter strongly to get out to an 18 point lead before we literally kicked some last minute goals to go to ¾ time in front by just the 7 points.  It was promising to be a great last quarter and both sides gave their all with the Eagles able to hang on for a 8 point win.  We had a good contribution from a number of players across the night with our centreman Todd Hoyle displaying some excellent footy skills to be our best, with Ben Goold continuing his run of good form on the wing, Kai Pudney being a very effective mid fielder, Liam Martin playing well on his wing and at half back, Isaac Brill very good in defence and Tyson Friend being  a very hard competitor for the contested ball in our forward line and kicking 2 goals.

As I mentioned last week, we played for the Jake Watson Shield and there was a very poignant presentation ceremony after the game, reminding us all of the really important things in our lives. Both sides did credit to the spirit of the game.

Also this week we were very fortunate to have Nason Dare, a lad from the APY Lands play with us and it was great to see him with a big smile on his face in the middle of the circle as we sang the club song.

On to this week now and we play a big game against Sturt at Footy Park this Saturday afternoon at 2.10pm.

This week’s game versus Sturt was one I am sure both sides have been looking forward to. The evenness of our teams always creates a good battle and even with the weather the way it was, the game still delivered.

The first quarter saw Sturt kick with the breeze and have the majority of the play. We were lucky Sturt didn’t make the most of their chances kicking inaccurately going to quarter time with a 23 point lead. The statistics were showing the game was closer than that so at the break we felt confident we could reverse that score in the second.

Kicking with the aid of the breeze the players were able to get back in the game kicking 5.1 for the term to make the half time margin only 6 points.

The way the game was being played we felt if we could be within 2 goals and the final break we could bring it home. The players did better than that winning the quarter by 2 points to narrow the margin to 4.

The final quarter saw the game predominately played in our half, having +26 possessions, +12 inside 50’s and scoring 19 to 2 points finally giving us a strong 13 point victory.

After a slow start to the game it was a strong response by the playing group. Firstly getting our hands back on the footy so we could start to control the tempo of the game, then secondly hit the scoreboard. Interestingly from the 10 min mark of the 3rd to the final siren we scored 6-3 to 1-2 from 20 to 6 inside 50’s. This gives the players a huge amount of belief in what we can do from any position.

This was a game in which we can be proud of but make no mistake the battles between our clubs won’t finish there. They are a very good side and I am sure we will meet again at some stage this season.

As has been well documented we have some senior players still unable to get on the field which is disappointing, but what comes from this is opportunity. The ability of our less experienced players to step up has been great to watch and I am sure they will continue to learn from their experience on playing on great players, this can only be a positive for the future of our club. I get asked a lot about returning players and all I can say is they will be back by the end of the year but probably not in the near future, so let’s just sit back and enjoy watching the team play with passion and excitement.

RESERVES MATCH REPORT ROUND 13

After a disappointing hit out last week the Reserves took up the challenge of responding on Sunday, only to fall short by a goal late in the final quarter.

Kicking with the aid of a 3-4 goal breeze the boys set a (11) point lead at quarter time 3.1 to 1.2 through direct ball movement albeit times turn overs by hand & foot gave the opposition chances to go forward.

The second quarter was fairly much played in our defensive half which was reflective of the inside 50 count for the quarter (13) to (5) in favour of the opposition, with good inside pressure & solid defensive work by the backs the opposition were unable to capitalise kicking (1.6) compared to (1.1) from our (5) inside entries & at half time we went into the break with a (6) point lead 4.2 to 2.8

You could have been mistaken to assume that we may have been kicking into the breeze in the third & trying to save a game rather than win it as our midfield were defending slightly too deep & our forwards too far back, therefore lacking frontal pressure on the player with the ball, giving the opposition time to possess & control the game in their forward half (16 to 3 inside 50 entries) & at three quarter time Sturt took a (3) point lead 6.2 to 5.11

With the game in the balance & kicking into the breeze we set ourselves a challenge if we wanted to win & to the credit of the boys they took up the challenge controlling 85% of the quarters game time & after a couple of missed opportunities to convert & lead the game the opposition were able to kick a goal late in the quarter to take the game by (6) points 7.5 to 7.11

After the game the boys were disappointed to let a game slip after getting so close. In particular given that we felt we probably controlled the majority of the game time, but as we identified last week at this level it’s a must to put (4) complete quarters together if you want to succeed.

On the upside debutant James Rowe fitted in well to the team from the U18`s & having the return of the state U18 players provided some balance & energy around the ground, show casing a positive future at the Eagles football club.

The challenge this week for the young group will be the (6) day break between games, therefore how they go about their Recovery & Preparation will be key to the result.

The under 18s had a very good win on Saturday against Sturt winning 8 goals 13 points to 5 goals 11 points. It was a tough game with both teams competing hard as the low scores suggest and after an even 1st half we held a 1 point lead going into half time. A very good third quarter allowed us to kick 3 goals 5 points whilst holding Sturt goal less and then both teams kicked 2 goals in the last quarter to enable us to run out 20 point victors. We had a lot of good players and Jacob Pedler and Jarrod Miller both gave us a lot of drive in our midfield. Bailey Hann’s 3 goals up forward were very important in the context of a low scoring game, Sam Michael gave us plenty of drive in Ruck, Jacob Wehr was very effective on his wing and our defence was led very well by our two key positions in Chris Schwarz and Sam Mckay, ably supported by Isaac brill and Liam Martin. Also Luke McCauley played his first game with us for the year and did well across half back with 9 marks and 17 possessions.

This week we take on North Adelaide at home and they are in a rich vein of form having won 5 of their last 6 games so it will be another tough match.

Playing at Prospect anytime is tough, so to come away with a solid 30 point win was pleasing. At times we did over used the ball and were missing simple targets but the positive is as the game wore on we got better, which is consistent with recent efforts and is giving the group a strong belief.

The wind was a factor at times but I am not sure if it favoured either team as it went across the ground for the majority of the game, it was just tricky to read. The first quarter saw the players get off to a reasonable start. In-accuracy in front of goals let us down and our efficiency by hand was poor. At the break we had a 2 point lead.

The second was an arm wrestle with North having the best of the inside 50 count, but the players were efficient with our entries to win the term by 6 points to give us an 8 point lead at the main break.

I felt the third we played impatient football which resulted in some simple turn overs. Even though we won the quarter the game wasn’t flowing and it had become a slog.

The final quarter the players really got going. This has been a consistent theme all year and one we are happy that we are finishing games so strongly. All of our main indicators were right on and other than kicking straight to have 9 scoring shots to 1 was pleasing, finally running out winners by 30 points.

Unfortunately through this difficult time with so many injuries the Reserves are having a tough time on the scoreboard. Clearly we would love to see the results change, but at the moment we have a number of players getting invaluable experience. Even though it’s tough on the players I couldn’t be happier with the positive attitude and the single mindedness to keep working on what counts for the individual and the Eagles football club to continue to get better, and not be dictated by scores. Development is our first priority in all grades below League. This is consistent with what we have done for many years now and I am sure with all this hard work the rewards will come in the future.

This week against Norwood poses another huge challenge, they made us look second rate out at Norwood earlier in the year. Like all challenges we have come up against this year we will embrace it and put our best foot forward.

ROUND 14 MATCH REPORT – RESERVES

This week was always going to be a challenge given that the reserves are slightly under manned with senior players out & while the result on the scoreboard may have been disappointing, you couldn’t fault the endeavour & willingness to stick to the game plan all day.

Kicking with a 4-5 goal breeze North got out to a (35) point lead at quarter time 6.5 to 1.0. Through some good work around the ball & in defence the boys went with North in the second & at half time went into the main break 2.2 to 7.10.

The third quarter saw North get on top around Stoppages & Clearances & while the defence was standing tall by sheer weight of forward 50 entries North were able to put score on the board, to the boys credit there was no collapse & were able to kick (2) goals for the quarter trailing 4.3 to 13.10 at three quarter time.

As mentioned in the opening the boys stuck to the game plan all day & in the final quarter started to win some clearances, carrying & linking up with good ball movement for periods of the quarter & while North may have had more shots on goal the quarter was pretty much controlled by the Eagles.

Every season is a long season & when the loses outweigh the wins it can feel longer than usual however with so many positives coming from elevation of players from U18 to Reserves & Reserves to League this season, coupled with periods were we have controlled games this season we cannot lose sight of how the reserves team is travelling.

There is plenty to look forward to in the final games for the Reserves season as it plays its part in supporting the League side in its quest for success.

The Under 18s lost on Saturday, going down to North Adelaide by 6 points. Unfortunately we got off to a very poor start, with North kicking 5 goals in the first 12 minutes! We steadied after that, only allowing one more for the quarter and generating a couple of opportunities ourselves but we went in to quarter time 36 points down. We didn’t quite take our chances in the second quarter, kicking 4 goals 4 points but we were terrific in the third quarter matching North’s 2 goals with 2 of our own.

It was set up for a big last quarter, we were still 18 points in arrears and after getting to within 1 point twice, North were able to steady with a late goal and despite a couple of shots on goal late in the game we couldn’t bridge the gap and North ran out worthy winners by 6 points. As for best players, Chris Schwarz continued his good form in defence and Jacob Pedler, Kai Pudney and Jarrod Miller battled hard in the midfield along with Sam Michael, and Connor McLeod won plenty of the ball at half back giving us some good run.

This week we play Glenelg at Gliderol Stadium so we will be working very hard during the week to attempt to bounce back from this defeat.

Every game you are involved in there are positives and negatives. The positives from Saturday’s game was we got some much needed game time into Petrenko and Wundke as they have missed a lot of footy, and our less experienced players were given key roles against a quality side and this will be beneficial to them and the club in the future. The negatives were easy to see. By the reaction of the opposition this game meant a lot and unfortunately it didn’t seem to mean enough to us. Every week you must turn up regardless of what the game means as personal pride should always take over. On this occasion we were completely out played.

The game started with Norwood kicking with the aid of a good breeze and with the possibility of ordinary weather on the way we had to get off to a good start. This didn’t eventuate with Norwood controlling the quarter, and if it wasn’t for inaccurate kicking the score could have been much worse.

The middle quarters is where we lost it. In both of these quarters we fumbled and made poor decisions by hand and foot. Our lack of interest to take the game on was frustrating and just lead to more errors.

There we some better signs later in the game but to be honest the sting went out the game half way through the 3rd so we won’t pat ourselves on the back for that. In the end we had a disappointing 34 point loss.

All throughout this year the players have been fantastic and I am sure this will act as a good reminder that if you take the foot off by 1% football isn’t much fun. So with that said we will study hard about our good and bad points over the last month and make sure we have a clear plan going forward over the remaining 3 games. Some players will get some well-earned rest and some will put the foot down to make sure in a months’ time we have a happy, healthy and hungry full list in readiness for a big post season.

After a number of half games & patchy moments in the Reserves this week the boys clicked & put four quarters together to enjoy a nine point win

Right from the opening bounce it was clear that the boys were switched on & up for the challenge, kicking into a stiff northerly breeze we were able to put the opposition under pressure forcing rushed kicks & forward ball movement & at quarter time the score was 0.3 to 2.5.

The second quarter was again an even contest between the two sides & the windy conditions were proving to be challenging to convert accurately, with the boys kicking 2.5 from 7 shots on goal & at half time went in with a 2 point lead 2.8 to 2.6.

The third quarter saw some of the best football played by the Reserves for the year, when Norwood got out to a two goal lead early, the boys took the game up another notch possessing the ball & linking up with handball. The quality of ball movement at times meant Norwood were unable to hold up the attacking play & with 6 shots on goal, we went in at three quarter time with a 9 point lead 6.10 to 5.7

As expected Norwood came out throwing everything into it in the final quarter kicking a couple of early goals, as with the third it was during this stage of the game that the boys produced some of their best football by remaining composed, well structured & executing their skills, kicking the next 4 goals to get out to a 20 point lead. Norwood hit back with a late charge from the 20 minute mark, kicking 2 goals to draw back to 8 points but this was one game the boys had worked too hard in to let go & again they regained control of ball & the game to win by 9 points at the final siren.

Round 15 result comes from continuous game time in players allowing players to learn from & with each other about how they play while adapting to the rise in standard of competition & to the credit of all the players their improvement over a short time shows their eagerness to improve & play at the next level.

The challenge for boys now is to prepare well & back it up against South away after the bye.

ROUND 15 – UNDER 18’S VS GLENELG MATCH REPORT

The Under 18s got back into the winners’ circle this week with a good 30 point win against Glenelg. Kicking with a strong breeze in the first quarter we attacked relentlessly but did not kick straight and had 3 goals 5 points whist keeping Glenelg scoreless at ¼ time. Glenelg’s turn with the wind and we defended well and importantly managed to attack well and both teams kicked 3 goals for the quarter and we had a 24 point lead at half time. The third quarter was pretty even with both teams creating attacking opportunities and although we narrowly won the quarter 3 goals to 2 goals, it had set the stage for a big last quarter given the Bays had last use of the breeze. The team responded well and kicked 3 goals whilst holding Glenelg to 3 goals as well to win the game by an even 5 goals.

We had a good spread of influential players with Jake Cook, Mitch Mead, Xavier Redden and Todd Hoyle doing well in our midfield, Isaac Brill and Chris Schwarz were good defenders and Tyson Friend continued his good form as one of our small forwards. Liam Wood returning to football after an injury lay off was also very good for us and Sam Michael continued to work very hard in our ruck department supported well by Grady Armfield. It was also good to give Jackson Mead and Kysiah Pickett, two of our State Under 16 players, another Under 18 game and they both did well.

We have the week off this week and when we return we play the top of the table Panthers who are in excellent form, so it should be a great game at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval on Saturday 12th August.
