Four more Eagles off to the AFL

The Woodville West Torrens FC would like to congratulate Luke Dunstan, Malcolm Karpany, Cameron Giles and Riley Knight on being selected in the NAB AFL Draft held on the Gold Coast on the 21st of November.

Luke Dunstan was taken at Pick Number 18 by St Kilda and hails from the South Clare Football Club. Luke was the SA Under 18 Captain this year and gained All Australian honours as well as making his League debut against Glenelg in Round 18. Luke has been in the Eagles Talent program since 2009 and began playing in our Under 18 team as a 15 year old. Luke was a member of the Clubs U18 Premiership team.

Malcolm Karpany was selected by West Coast at Pick Number 31. Malcolm hails from the Moonta FC and was also a member of the SA Under 18 team in 2013. Malcolm also made his League debut in Round 4 against Norwood. Malcolm has been involved in the Clubs Talent program since 2010 and is a dual U18 Premiership Player winning the Alan Stewart Medal in the 2103 U18 Grand Final.

Cameron Giles was selected at pick number 39 by the Carlton. Cameron came to the Eagles from the Blyth Snowtown Football Club. Cam also represented SA at the U18 National Championships this year playing as a key defender. Cameron has been involved in the Eagles Talent program since 2010 and was a member of the 2013 U18 Premiership team.

Riley Knight was selected by the Adelaide Football Club with pick number 46. Riley is another South Clare junior who has been involved with the Eagles talent program since 2010. Riley also represented South Australia in the 2013 NAB National Championships. Unfortunately for Riley he was unable to play in our Under 18 Premiership due to a knee injury.

Luke, Malcolm, Cameron and Riley join a list of 20 other Woodville West Torrens products currently in the AFL system, and everyone at the Club wishes them all the best in the future.

The 2013 NAB AFL Rookie Draft will be held electronically on Wednesday 27th November at 10.30am. Logo on to the AFL website to see if any more of our Eagles star will join the AFL ranks.

AFL Draft Empty Re: AFL Draft

Yes - a pretty good record but accept that it may be a little misleading when a player such as Cameron Giles spent almost all of his developing days in the country and last season played mostly for Prince Alfred College and only a few games for the Eagles U18s last season to get drafted - should we take credit for his development? Every Club has similar country zoned players where the credit for their development is more due to their home country town team and family (Dad). Amos Frank is another - how much influence did we have on his development compared with the years from 5-22 playing in ATY Lands (or whatever), then playing one season of Seconds football? Nevertheless, the Eagles must be presenting a attractive pathway for these lads to come down and try out so WELL DONE!!!!
Only a shame so many of the young Eagles fail to make it with the recent crop 3 years ago being an example - Sumner (maybe 1 game), Harding and Growdon all failing to play a game. ? how the number of Eagles draftees who play 50 AFL games rate against say, Norwood.
But hey, all things considered, WELL DONE.

Fair question Premiers, interesting they do acknowledge the home club when the draft takes place now, but still a players chances of getting drafted are probably far greater if he is working his way up the chain from country or amateur club to our junior squads then under 16's 18's, twos and league.
The 3 boys you mentioned - can't help but think the first 2 may have been a different story had they both had another year in our system or had they ended up in Melbourne even. Growden may have gone further had he not broken his leg.
