Post by Col D Sun Feb 26, 2012 8:24 pm

After last Friday's very successful internal trial and then weekend camp, we should be looking forward to our trial this Saturday at Thebarton against Glenelg.

Times for Reserves and league are as normal - league at 2:10pm - ressies at 11:30

Then March 10th. against Westies and March 17th. against South at Noarlunga

Glenelg fielded their best team in the first half, Eagles fielded their best team in the second half so hard to gauge team performance but some individual performances:
Rowntree and Sam Marten would have been right up near the best performers besides all the experienced brigade that came on in the second half.Cameron Ellis-Yolman was a surpriseand could be theX factor - difficult to man up on this 191 cm midfielder - could play even forward pocket as a floating tall.
On today's performance, Eddy isn't going to be the gut running midfielder that we hoped - more a Leigh Treeby type, and a 2011 version at that. Seemed a little overweight to me as did Sumner. But early days.
Provisional team based on today's showing but likely changes each week;

FF Salter Grocke Goldsworthy

HF Kane Staple Ellis-Yolmen

C Jarrad Powell Toumpas

HB Marten Day Raymond

FB Guifreda Grieger McKenzie

1st Ruck Parry, Lewis, Ciccolella

2nd Ruck Redden, Lewis, Rowntree

Expecting AFL Salter and Redden to be available. If Thompson is available, it releases McKenzie to play up the ground at HB and Marten to replace Jarrad on the wing - Jarrad's losthis form - a shocker Grand final and again, ordinary trial. Needs to lift quickly to hold his place.

fitzgerald and rae played reserves kicked about 1 goal each von bertouch played league got a goal i think but didnt see him untill the last quater.

premiers did you see the reserves as sumner played both games so you couldn't expect much in the league from him, as for eddy it takes time to adjust and as with jarrad its only the first trial it means nothing he wont loose his spot in the team there wouldn't be anyone nearly as good to replace him with.

the only player i have questions with is longbottom seems like a reserves player at best to me but then i thought that about day and we all know how that turned out.

Von Bertoch wasn't prominent - played him in the backlines for middle part of game, then in the last Q when in the forward lines, Staple was firing at Full Forward so it was Von Bertouch's job to stay out of his way and allow clear passage so he didn't show much - but, early days.

Disagree with you Zest. Thought Longbottom, in the reserves trial, showed good pace, clean hands, good ball carry, satisfactory delivery. Rated him far above Batley's game for example. Disappointed to see Peter Lindsay injured (on crutches with sprained ankle after game -was looking forward to seeing more of him.
Charlie Rae, servicable Reserves game but no big weapons for League football.
Fitzgerald looked unfit and reports are that he's been helping on the farm and missed much of the pre-season so may take a few weeks to show his undoubted potential.
Sumner was interesting. Disappointed to see him in the Reserves trial - didn't have the body shape of a player recently out of the AFL system - almost a slightly leaner Wilbur Wilson. Looked half-hearted, disinterested but when he came on in the League briefly, his urgency was there but lacked run/fitness.
Surprised they went for Bock instead of Hoban as Parry's partner in the League trial - reckon it must be because they wanted to test Bock out early - still lacks presence with his slight frame while Hoban does have a strong body and played well albeit against weak opposition. Expect that Hoban will be preferred from now on.
Thought an unknown by name of Inglis, a short CHF, showed something in the Reserves. Keep in mind that our Seconds lost by about 12 goals and looked ordinary.
? how they're going to use Shirley this year - doesn't appear to be a spot in the midfiels with Rowntree, Kane, Ciccollela, Eddy, Lewis, Powell, Goldsworthy. Smalls in the backline appear strong as well? Still injuries will open up places.

Longbottom did show something .Ingliss also showed something IMHO.
Rae like Grieger was used out of position in the ruck.
Sumner like most of the seconds showed something the first few minutes of the first quarter. Then glenelg took over .
Part of the first quarter and part of the last quarter the seconds showed something.BUT other than that not much had changed .First trial so its hopefully upwards from there.

Read that Redden was in best players , still think we will see him plying for us for a large part of the season.Esp if the Pwr first string rucks are fit. I think we should be pushing Hoban as our 2nd ruck. Parry has maybe 3 yrs left so I feel we need to groom him to maybe be our lead ruckman in years to come, unless we go out and buy/sign another gun ruck.

Just hope that Hoban gets some game time soon. Could de offered big money to play in a country competition and then, in 2013, we might not have Redden or Parry....... or HOBAN!!
A player who may have slipped under the radar for Eagles supporters is Jarrad Irons. Started with a "bang" for Port Power in last year's NAB Cup kicking 3 goals against an AFL team, started in our Seconds, never got going before injured. ? how he's travelling at present but could be another handy small. Puts a bit of pressure on players like Chris Hall.

Think Irons would have been, along with Goldy and Kane one of the better players (at times) yesterday.

Didn't see the Trial vs West - was interstate but surprised to see the score showing a thrashing. Can someone give a run-down of the trial and the reasons for weak performance. Should be starting to show something with only one more trial!!

No excuses but west went the fist in both games .
Once again the A grade midfield was on the bench for the begining .Eagles skill level was off again.Short kicking and handballs were really bad .
What more can i say .Except Harding in the seconds should get a league berth soon .I think we kicked 7 and he kicked 4 of them .
Kris Kane and Goldy must been BOG
