Eagles V Port June 18 th Maughan Thiem Hyundai oval Empty Good thing?

Post by Gazz Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:10 pm

Was that the loss we had to have? Our last quarters have been poor for a few weeks now but that was a poor second half. The mental pressure when a side is on a winning streak probably plays a part so i'm hoping the lads breathe a sigh of relief and get back to basics. Our tackles did not stick and our decision making was poor. Start again now Eags

Can probably learn a fair bit from Todays game, they put the pressure on all day and we struugled for a good part of the game to handle it, almost outplayed us at our own game.

I think it's a continuation of what I've seen over the past few weeks only this time we were only 6 points up during the third quarter and not 6 goals up. And all those wasted chances up to that point - 5.10 to 5.4 says it all.

I am hoping it is the loss we had to have and not the start of what happened to finish off last year. On the other hand, the Reserves are the complete opposite - have won every last quarter this year bar one. And have already booked a place in the Second Semi.

Reserves have had a fantastic season to date, despite changes to the team every week they continue to get the job done with about 8 goal avg winning margin.
Last game against Port at Alberton about 5 mins in to the 3rd qtr we lead by 10 pts and went on to win by 101, today lead by about 4 goals at three qt and went on to win by 12 goals, great to watch.

17 in a row now for the Reserves, which equals the club record which finished last year (Rd 13 2013 to Rd 5 2014)

I may have posted this before, but I cannot find it anywhere on any forum, but:
Only five greater winning streaks in the Reserves history; they are:
21 - Torrens (Rd 14 1915-Rd 5 1920)  The 1919 season is the only undefeated season by any Reserves side
20 - Port (Rd 16 1952-Rd 16 1953)  They then lost the last minor round match and the 2nd Semi to Torrens, then the Preliminary
20 - Central (Rd 2 2001-2SF 2001)  Then they lost the GF to us
19 - Torrens (Rd 17 1962-Rd 16 1963)  Lost the last four matches of the season
18 - North (Rd 19 1965-Rd 14 1966)  Ended up going out in straight sets

So there isn't any joy for anyone after those winning streaks, but we have a chance of history by this streak to continue to win no.23!

Apologies for some misinformation that was in the above post.  Torrens Reserves in 1920 went on to win the 1920 title, the only loss in that season was the match which broke the 21 game winning streak.  It was in 1921 that the club missed the chance to win 4 in a row  because they stood out of the finals in protest of losing the points in Rd 16 1921 against West because of playing an ineligible player.

On a slightly different note, the Reserves winning scoreline reminded me of a League score in 1993; the Reserves winning with 19.8 (122) to 7.7 (49)  Look familiar? Smile

Is Seconds success what we should be talking about?
We might be the most successful Seconds team in the competition since the war but strong clubs don't dwell on that. Mick Godden has said before, words to the effect, that 1 League Premiership out of 5 League seasons with the other 4 seasons being 10th is preferred over 5 seasons ranking 2nd.  Only care about the Seconds getting to the Second semifinals to provide in-form players to our League team and developing players - I would have thought if the club can get 5 excellent seconds players in a mediocre Seconds team who go on to become good League players is preferred over an a good even Seconds Premiership team of players, none of whom become top League players. Hopefully, the Eagles are getting it right on both counts.

On a different tack, what are the chances of Jarrad Redden playing for the Eagles in 2016? Power are well set up for ruckmen and ? whether he would get picked up by another AFL team.

I'd like to think the continued success of the 2nds means that competition is being placed on the League players to perform.

Redden I'd like, unless the Power see him as a 'project player' after the injuries he has received over recent seasons.

I think the pleasing thing about the twos this year is that when we had a few injuries in the league side over the last 4 or 5 rounds the players that came up did their bit, Sam Rowland for example was playing well in the twos and when the time came he slotted in nicely, at the same time the under 18's players who came up to the twos like Jake Commitogianni have done the same thing.
Think that having the likes of Appleton, Sinor, Templeton, Rowland, M Raymond, Ellis playing well in the twos has kept the pressure on the boys in the ones.
Lobbe & Ryder going to make it tough for Reds at Alberton you would think.

(Re Jarrad Redden)
In addition, to Ryder and Lobbe in the League, Mitch Harvey in their Reserves (SANFL) has probably moved ahead of Redden re a young ruckman. Harvey is more versatile, certainly more mobile and has a sounder body. If Jarrad had established himself in the AFL team before injuries, then perhaps the Power or another AFL team would list him next year but sadly, this was not the case.
Certainly would be a huge asset for the SANFL Eagles, given the way he carved us up  on Saturday at the centre-bounces. This would release Marc Borholm to be the third forward.
Anyway, back to pondering how we're going to get to this year's Grand Final.
